Computer Science and Informatics researcher Abigail McAlpine comments on Prime Minister Theresa May attending the World Economic Forum in Davos

“Prime Minister Theresa May will be attending the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, during which she will discuss the UK’s interest in becoming the world leader in deciding how artificial intelligence can be moderated to be deployed in ethical and safe ways in future.

The UK will be working on a new advisory body, which was announced in the Autumn budget with hopes that the UK will take the lead in developing the co-ordination of moderation and regulation of artificial intelligence with other countries.

The Prime Minister will also be confirming the UK’s intention to join the Davos forum and council on artificial intelligence, but the plans to be leaders in the industry of AI moderation may come to a halt due to stronger claims from other members.

France was picked as the base for Google to develop a dedicated AI research centre which will be exploring the opportunities in AI for a range of industries including health, science, art and the environment. The research will be published open-source so others can benefit of the results of their work. Facebook have also expanded the size of its investment in France by committing over 2 billion euros into the country for work that will include machine learning.

The UK’s bid to leadership is held on the figures suggesting the health of the AI Start-Up economy in the UK, as an AI-related business, has been created in the country every week for several years. Mrs May will also use the governments ‘preparedness’ to bring AI into government with the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation, which was announced on the 22 November 2017.

The Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation was created with the intention of working with the government, regulators and those in industry to lay the foundations for future AI adoption. If the bid for leadership is accepted in the World Economic Forum in Davos, it could dramatically affect the success, markets, governance and investment in the UK.”
