The University of Huddersfield youth and community work degree has been running for over 20 years. During this time more than 600 students have graduated from our courses. We are very proud that many are working with young people in West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, other parts of the country and internationally.

When the Youth and Community Work degree course (full-time pre-service, part-time in service) was first developed by Professor Christine Jarvis and Martin Nottley, the aim was to support local youth and community workers with their practice and continuing development as well as training the next generation of youth and community work practitioners.

Over the past few years, Local Authority youth work provision has been hard hit nationally by austerity cuts. Supporting a sector that is struggling both locally and nationally isn’t an easy task, but the current youth and community work team (Dr Martin Purcell, Jean Hatton, Dr Helen Jones) want to pursue the aim of working closely with our colleagues in the field.

So, we are planning to re-launch the Youth and Community Work Lunchtime Seminar Series aimed at linking academic research and teaching to youth and community work practice.

These seminars are aimed at current youth and community work students, their placement supervisors, our graduates, people involved in research and practitioners within the field of youth and community work.

The seminar series will support the development of the academic youth and community work network within the university alongside the community of practice. This will enable the links between our student body, the research community and practitioners to continue to grow. Such links will enable our students to understand the wider environment of the youth and community work discipline and will support the sharing and publicising of relevant research with practitioners in the field.

Our plans for 2018-19 are gathering momentum and include:
