I initially heard about the MacComms internship from The University of Huddersfield’s Job Shop. I was near completion of my final year studying English Literature and Creative Writing. It was the perfect opportunity to utilise my English literature and creative writing skills in crafting copy and completing work to a timed schedule. As an English student the opportunity shone to me and I couldn’t wait to apply.
My skills grew as I began to learn more about the industry and most importantly the business. Since starting at MacComms I have not simply learned a great deal but equally grown as a person. After completing my application and interview I waited in anticipation for my phone call.
Having completed a campaign to help MacComms to launch their wedding PR specialism I was pleased and overjoyed to receive a call from Ellie inviting me to start on the 1st of June as account executive intern.
My first week was packed with new locations, meetings and tasks. I instantly enjoyed the role, experiencing new environments and challenges, it was the perfect beginning to my first position out of university. I quickly developed a keen involvement within all aspects of the business and I was pleased to be involved in regularly attending client meetings, event nights at the Entrepreneurial Spark programme and networking events.
Alongside my learning and development there have been several perks to working at MacComms. From the beginning of my internship I introduced a ‘Starbucks Friday’ which was welcomed and enjoyed from both our Huddersfield and Leeds offices. Topping up that Friday feeling I have been treated to monthly team lunches as a welcome reward after hard work. The team atmosphere doesn’t end there as I have also had the pleasure of a team building day, spent axe throwing and paintballing at Hazelwood Castle, courtesy of MacComms client Live For Today.
Shadowing Ellie, I have learned a great deal about business management, marketing and, of course, PR. I continually strive to grow my knowledge and understanding of the business. My passion for the business is taking me on training to better develop my skills of copy writing, social media and marketing. Alongside this later this year I will be attending a blog writing course at the Victorian Albert Museum in London.
Since working at MacComms I have used my university knowledge to its full potential, learning and developing new and existing skills. For everything I have to thank Ellie, who has continually supported and developed me throughout my time at MacComms, it truly is a pleasure working together.
MacComms is keen to offer work experience to students and graduates. Interested? Email Ellie for further information.
