Derwent Water, Lake District

Have you ever had the feeling that you’re on your own and nobody understands why you want change and are pursuing your dreams?

Perhaps you feel that you are constantly fighting against the tide?

Or maybe you sometimes feel unsupported by your “friends” when you’re trying new things?

….a man was walking along the beach and saw a fisherman in the surf with a bait bucket beside him. As he drew closer, he saw that the bait bucket had no lid and yet it had live crabs inside. He couldn’t understand why the bait bucket wasn’t covered to stop the crabs from escaping and stopped to speak to the fisherman.

“You don’t understand” the fisherman replied, “if there is one crab in the bucket it would crawl out very quickly. However, when there are many crabs in the bucket, if one tries to crawl up the side, the others grab hold of it and pull it back down so that it will share the same fate as the rest of them.”

It’s the same with people. If someone tries to do something different, escape their environment, dream big dreams, often others will try to drag them back down to share their fate.

The moral of the story? Ignore the crabs and do what is right for you!

  • What would happen if you focussed on your dreams and goals?
  • How different would it be if you stopped listening to the negative comments of other people?
  • What amazing things would you achieve if you chose to “climb the crab bucket”?
