Nurin - Equalities Officer at Huddersfield Students' Union
Nurin Mushahar
Malaysian student Nurin is the current Equalities Officer at the Huddersfield Students' Union. She shared a little about her experience in the role with us.
"I’ve been passionate about representing students since I started my studies at the University of Huddersfield, so I was really excited to be elected Equalities Officer. I was fortunate to be working with the Students’ Union as my placement year, so I had an understanding of the Officer roles and I knew I could do so much more than listening and taking notes.
The role of Equalities Officer involves meeting with the Liberation Networks at the University, and attending regular meetings which can range from School Teaching and Learning Committees, to School Boards or Academic Misconduct panels. I also help to run student engagement events.
My role specifically focuses on the student voices that are generated from the Liberation Networks and reaching out to the University and/or local community on how these students can be well represented and inclusivity can be achieved. I receive both ideas and concerns from students, who come from different areas of the student community.
In the Liberation Network meetings, we discuss current issues that relate to the Network, such as sexual harassment issues, LGBT History Month, Black Lives Matter movement, Disabled Students’ Allowance, and we bring these issues up with relevant bodies in the University.
I am also part of several School Teaching and Learning Committees where I meet with the Pro Vice Chancellor of Teaching and Learning, course leaders, lecturers and other staff members within the schools to discuss ongoing work. This is also the place where I bring up student matters.
The Officer team and I meet regularly to discuss what changes we can create throughout the year.
Being part of the Students’ Union has enriched my university experience. As an International student I have developed interpersonal skills and I get to meet different people with similar values. I would encourage other students to get involved with the Students’ Union whether through our sports clubs, academic or non-academic societies, job opportunities or speaking to the Officer team about their experiences and questions."
