Hello!

Why I chose to study Computer Science with Games Programming BSc(Hons)

When it came time to leave college I had to choose what to do with my life, but I didn’t have any ideas about what I wanted to do, and so began my search for the next step on my journey.

I first looked at apprenticeships and was pretty keen on the idea at first, but the more I researched them I realised that they weren’t for me. That’s when I decided to go have a look around some Universities, I had never thought about University until now but I figured there was no harm in it anyway.

I Had a look at lots of courses, areas like Business, Accounting and Finance after my family tried to encourage me into them as much as possible. I had never really considered Computer Science at first, but after thinking back to what I had enjoyed learning through GCSEs and college it occurred to me what I was really interested in.

After searching around at all sorts of Universities, I then came upon my current course and it sounded great! I have always loved games, and still have fond memories of playing Ratchet and Clank for hours on end on my parents old PS2.

Why Huddersfield?

Computer Science with Games Programming gave me an opportunity to explore this passion whilst still getting a strong understanding of how computers work. It didn’t limit me to just the game development route and has also allowed me to explore various forms of software development along with solid Computer Science fundamentals.

Another big factor that helped me decide was the location. Coming from a little village I liked the idea of being close to civilisation but still having scenic landscapes and sprawling hills right on my doorstep and Huddersfield gave me the perfect blend of both.

My advice

Choosing what you want to do after college can be incredibly daunting at first but I have some tips that helped me make the process a little bit easier.

Try and look for something that interests you, not something you think will get you a high paid job or what your parents want you to do. You will just end up getting bored and want to give up later down the line.

The course you choose also needs to be something that you have a real passion for, it will be hard at times and you need to have the drive to keep going at it no matter what. Don’t do something that you have a fleeting passion for, you’ll only burn out.

Don’t limit yourself! Just because you haven’t done the subject at A-level doesn’t always mean that you can’t learn something new. If you have a passion for something like me but might not have any practical experience, consider a relevant course in your options.

After my first year I can definitely say that going with my gut and picking Computer Science with Games Programming was the right choice for me and I can’t wait to keep going and learning more.
