Tell us about the Career Development and Employability Studies Group at Huddersfield

We are a long-established, highly regarded, and forward-looking centre for postgraduate education and the training of careers professionals. In fact, our programme was one of the first to be established when careers guidance was professionalised in the UK in the early 1970s. We are really proud of that heritage, whilst also committed to being at the forefront of professional education in our field of work.

What postgraduate career guidance courses do you offer?

We currently run a postgraduate Career Development and Employability course which can be studied as a postgraduate diploma or full Master’s. This course provides students with the essential knowledge, skills and qualifications to pursue a professional career in Career Development and Employability. We offer flexible study options too. The course can be studied full or part-time, online or blended to fit around your work, family life and other commitments.

What are the employment opportunities like for Career Development graduates?

The high profile of the employability agenda in universities, together with developments in careers work in schools and colleges has created a significant level of demand for qualified people in our field. The market is very buoyant and it’s very common for our students to have jobs waiting for them as soon as they complete the course.

Our graduates typically go on to work in professional Careers and Employability roles at schools and colleges, or universities, with some of our alumni working in senior leadership roles in university careers services. Some of our graduates go on to work in non-education settings too, for example, Career Development within the NHS and Graduate Talent Management at one of the Big Four professional service firms.

What quality of teaching can students expect on the Career Development and Employability course?

Students can expect a first-class teaching experience. The teaching team are research active academics, involved in the creation of new knowledge and we bring this latest thinking to our students. At the same time, we have all done the front-line job, we all hold relevant qualifications, and we are constantly in touch with individual practitioners and employing organisations. Our strong industry connections enable us to bring the highest calibre of visiting speakers on to the programme to facilitate student placements and projects and job opportunities.
