Hi! My name’s Dr Marta Wesierska, I’m a Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Huddersfield.

There are many reasons why you may choose to study a Psychology Conversion Master’s.

You may be looking to change career and make a meaningful, positive impact in the world, or you may have a personal interest in psychology and want to understand yourself and others better. You may be looking for a career that offers excellent career prospects. The University of Huddersfield offers two Psychology Conversion courses that can help you excel in your chosen career. One is the Psychology MSc (Distance Learning), studied 100% online, part-time, and the other is the Psychology MSc which is taught full-time on campus. In this blog, I explore some benefits to undertaking a conversion course in psychology.

1. To become a professional psychologist

A Psychology Conversion MSc course is designed for graduates who haven’t previously studied psychology, but who want to gain in-depth, Master’s level knowledge, without undertaking a second undergraduate degree. Or you may have studied a psychology undergraduate degree that was not accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

Studying for an accredited degree means graduates are eligible to register for Graduate Basis Chartered membership (GBC) with the BPS so you can apply for further study, which is required if you want to become a professional psychologist. Studying an accredited conversion course ensures you have the right level of understanding to move on to study psychology further. A psychology conversion course is the first step towards becoming a professional psychologist.

2. You’re looking for a fulfilling, rewarding career

Are you motivated by a desire to contribute to society? Then a conversion course in psychology may be right for you. A conversion course can provide the tools and knowledge to impact individuals and communities positively. You’ll address real-world issues such as mental health, and how behavioural, psychological, and social processes influence physical health and illness. A career in psychology can be very fulfilling. It gives you the chance to contribute meaningful work while meeting your financial goals. Whether working as a clinical psychologist, counsellor, therapist, or educator, the opportunity to make a positive impact on people's lives can be profoundly rewarding.

3. You want a career with great prospects, where your skills are in high-demand

Psychologists have the potential to earn a good wage. In the NHS, trainee clinical psychologists’ salaries start at £35,392. After qualification, salaries within the NHS start at £43,742. Experienced psychologists can earn between £50,952 and £57,349, and heads of psychology services may earn in the region of £99,891 to £114,949, according to the NHS Agenda for Change (AfC) pay rates. Furthermore, psychologists are listed as a profession in the Government’s shortage occupations list meaning there is a growing need for qualified psychologists in the UK across many sectors, and if you’re a non-UK resident you could be eligible for the Skilled Worker visa.

4. You have a personal interest and want to develop professionally

Do you want to understand human behaviour and the world around you better? A Psychology Conversion MSc can satisfy your intellectual interests and help you gain an understanding of psychological principles surrounding human behaviour, emotions, and cognition. A psychology conversion course is not just for those who want to become professional psychologists, as this qualification can benefit any career that works closely with people across a range of sectors such as business, education, or healthcare. It can lead to increased self-understanding and a better comprehension of others, contributing to personal development and improved interpersonal relationships in the workplace or life more generally.

5. You want to hone your research skills

During our Psychology Conversion courses, you’ll carry out an independent piece of research under the supervision of an academic who has the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the BPS. You’ll have the opportunity to develop a robust research question, learn the process of constructing and carrying out research, analysing and interpreting data, and communicating your findings in a report. Having strong research skills can demonstrate to employers that you have good problem-solving abilities and can process and present complex information accurately and concisely. Research skills are not only invaluable in academic and professional settings, but they can also help you hone your critical thinking skills and gain a better ability to navigate an increasingly complex world.

To summarise, studying a Psychology Conversion course could be the first step to becoming a professional psychologist, a profession with excellent career prospects. You may also choose to study psychology as you’ve got a personal interest in the subject, or you want to enhance your career by developing a better understanding of yourself and others. Finally, you might want to challenge yourself and hone your research skills to benefit you - both professionally and personally.
