Three great reasons to study for an MBA degree

Dr Jason Wang
SENIOR LECTURER IN OPERATIONS & SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT
Hello! I am a Senior Lecturer in Operations & Supply Chain Management at Huddersfield Business School, and the Course Leader for our MBA programme.
A Master of Business Administration qualification, also known as an MBA, is a postgraduate degree focused on business administration. MBAs generally cover key aspects of businesses including finance, economics, marketing, human resource management, business innovation and risks, and strategic management. MBAs are ideal for professionals with at least two years of relevant work experience who have completed an undergraduate degree (although other qualifications can sometimes be considered). The MBA programme is suited and beneficial to a wide range of roles and professions, especially, for those experienced practitioners who request the skill and knowledge in the transitions from technical positions to managerial roles in their career and business development. Some examples include Operations Managers, Finance Managers, Management Analysts, HR Managers and Business Consultants.
At Huddersfield Business School, our MBA programme offers you a wealth of advantages through our focus on sustainability, responsibility, and ethics in the modern business context. It will help you realise your ambitions, become a more effective, responsible leader, develop a strategic and global management perspective, improve your chances of career progression, and help you build a global network. While there are endless benefits to studying an MBA, Dr Jason Wang, Senior Lecturer at Huddersfield Business School, and the Course Leader of the MBA program, shares his top three reasons why you should study an MBA…
1. Becoming a responsible leader in an ever-changing world
Business is becoming increasingly complex across the globe due to a variety of new and developing challenges such as societal changes, environmental and sustainability issues, and keeping up with changing legal regulations. Due to the increasingly dynamic nature of business, the world needs more responsible leaders to navigate through the changes and challenges and lead businesses and organisations to success. Our MBA’s overarching focus is on responsible leadership, which engenders the need to take a multiple stakeholder perspective. You will gain an in-depth understanding of responsible management, which will give you the necessary skills and knowledge to prepare you for senior roles in organisations. This could be in the private, public or not-for-profit sectors. Our curriculum will strengthen your professional capacity to deal with the ever-changing business environment. The MBA programme explores four key areas including, professional development to be a responsible leader, responsible leadership and people management, responsible leadership in changing environmental and societal contexts, and strategy development and innovation for fulfilling value propositions.

2. Career progression
Of course, many professionals chose to study for an MBA to accelerate their career progression. Completing an MBA is a solid investment for helping ambitious, hard-working professionals land senior positions within businesses and organisations. An MBA demonstrates to employers that you are committed to learning and developing skills and that you have gained a wealth of valuable knowledge and insight about the ins and outs of business management. Our MBA focuses on key skills and abilities that businesses look for in employees and senior leaders, and our practice-based teaching and learning model will provide you with problem-solving skills in real business contexts. Furthermore, another key reason why you might want to study an MBA is to increase your salary. According to Payscale, the average salary for an for an MBA graduate in the UK is GBP 56,000 per year, over double the UK national average wage. While an MBA does not guarantee financial wealth, it will give you the skills and knowledge to help you progress to a more senior position in the workplace or be a more effective business owner.
3. Building a global network
An MBA is a highly considered and globally recognised qualification, meaning it can open many doors to work opportunities across the globe - the world is certainly your oyster, and an MBA will help you stand out from the crowd in the global work market. What is more, at Huddersfield Business School, we welcome students from a wide range of countries, meaning those who study with us can make valuable professional connections and develop strong networking links with other like-minded, ambitious professionals. A main advantage of networking is how it can enhance your visibility and expand your global contacts, creating new business opportunities. You can share knowledge with others and receive career advice. You never know you may also land your dream job or hear about the opportunity of a lifetime from contacts you made while studying your MBA.
