SCHOOL DIRECTOR OF EXECUTIVE AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Hello. I am Nic Stenberg, and I am the School Director of Executive and Professional Development at Huddersfield Business School.
At Huddersfield Business School, we employ excellent researchers and teaching staff who care tremendously about our students’ learning experience. In this edition of ‘Meet the academics’ we shine a light on our Executive and Professional Development team with Nic Stenberg, School Director of Executive and Professional Development at Huddersfield Business School. In this blog, Nic delves into the array of opportunities Huddersfield Business School offers beyond traditional learning and the strong partnerships we’ve built with local organisations.
My name is Nic Stenberg, and I am the School Director of Executive and Professional Development at Huddersfield Business School. I’ve worked at Huddersfield Business School for four and a half years, teaching on courses for undergraduate, postgraduate, and executive education. As a chartered psychologist, my teaching focuses on topics that concern the management, motivation, and wellbeing of people in organisations. Before I joined the university, I was a Director of a successful consultancy business, offering research, facilitation, and evaluation services to organisations in education, health, environment, retail and financial services sectors. To ensure our learners are provided with the most relevant knowledge, my research focuses on different aspects of health and wellbeing.
I currently teach on our Master of Business Administration (MBA), leading two modules that focus on personal and professional development. In these modules, our students are familiarised with theories, concepts, skills, and tools that support their continuous professional development as responsible leaders. They build self-awareness and reflect on their motivation drivers as well as considering the quality and impact of their interpersonal relationships. We cover similar themes on a module that I teach for our Postgraduate students, called Emotional Intelligence for Effective Leadership. Here we explore six components of emotional intelligence including personal resilience, motivating others and empathy. We have introduced two new management and leaderships apprenticeships Professional Manager Apprenticeship and Senior Leader Higher Apprenticeship. On these courses, I teach learners about employee engagement and wellbeing in the workplace.
There are many ways to get involved with Huddersfield Business School. We’re very keen to reach into the local community and build good networks across the public, private and third sectors. We would like to be able to share our knowledge, but also learn from the organisations around us. Ultimately, I’d like people to realise that beyond traditional full-time degrees and postgraduate offers, Huddersfield Business School provides various avenues for collaboration, skill development and networking. We aim to break down barriers to continuing professional development, extending a warm invitation to non-traditional learners who may not have stepped into a classroom since their GCSEs.
My standout highlight has been launching the new apprenticeship courses - Professional Manager Apprenticeship (Level 5) and Senior Leader Higher Apprenticeship (Level 7). These qualifications are designed to equip people with the skills, knowledge and behaviours they need to realise their potential as outstanding, responsible managers and leaders.
We’ve also successfully built partnerships with local Health and Care providers such as the Kirklees Health and Care Partnership and Calderdale Cares Partnership, so that public, private and third sector providers across the health and care systems can learn together. We're eager to extend this success and build more partnerships to deliver apprenticeship offerings for other sectors.
The University of Huddersfield’s apprentice provision was recently awarded an outstanding rating by Ofsted, which includes our management and leadership apprenticeships. This has been another highlight and a testament to the dedication and excellence of our team, and we couldn't be prouder of this achievement.
When learners express how our programmes have made a big difference, impacted their thinking and practice, or reshaped their professional ambitions, it affirms the value of what we do. Learners not only acquire a qualification; they derive genuine value from their experience with us. Some opt to extend their learning by enrolling in additional courses or engaging with us in various capacities to further their professional development. Additionally, some return to impart their knowledge and experiences to new students and apprentices, creating a cycle of shared learning and growth.
