Adrian Jarvis

SENIOR LECTURER

Hello. I’m Adrian Jarvis, and I am a Senior Lecturer at Huddersfield Business School and the School of Education.

At Huddersfield Business School and the School of Education, we employ excellent researchers and teaching staff who care tremendously about our students’ learning experience. In this edition of ‘Meet the academics’ we shine a light on our Executive and Professional Development team with Adrian Jarvis, Senior Lecturer at Huddersfield Business School and the School of Education. In this blog, Adrian delves into the university's connections with local businesses and service organisations and the synergy that this has created.

Please can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I joined the University of Huddersfield in 2022 after an extensive career teaching English in this country and abroad. I initially pursued a degree in English at university, which laid the foundation of my passion for education. My postgraduate studies and research led me to specialise in leadership, a focus that eventually brought me to a teaching position at a British university in Malaysia. While in Malaysia, I had the privilege of contributing to a World Bank-funded initiative to enhance the leadership skills of higher education professionals in Bangladesh.

I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching: these give me ample opportunities to learn from other professionals while making a contribution to the development of teaching as a profession and practice.

Outside of work, I am a big fan of rock music and have written several books on the band Deep Purple.

What do you teach?

At the School of Education, I currently teach two leadership-focused modules as part of our Education MA programme, designed for professionals in education or the public service sector who hold positions of responsibility and aspire to take on more substantial leadership roles. The modules I lead look at leadership, specifically in educational contexts, and organisational learning, which is a way of thinking about leadership in a broader sense. The modules complement each other well as parts of an overall course in leadership and management. Additionally, I support new colleagues in the Higher Education PgCert programme, helping them reflect upon their practice, celebrating their successes and considering areas for development. The course leads to both a PG certificate and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

Within Huddersfield Business School, I am the Course Leader for the Level 7 Senior Leader Apprenticeship. This apprenticeship is tailored for individuals with senior leadership responsibilities who are eager to develop business strategies and enhance their managerial skills.

What do you wish people knew about the University of Huddersfield?

The university’s extensive connections with local businesses and service organisations are what I wish people knew about the University of Huddersfield. These connections are a tremendous asset to the university, opening countless doors for future collaborations. I’m currently involved in several projects deeply rooted in the local community, and the synergy we’re achieving can only be described as remarkable. One involves devising workplace wellbeing interventions for a local employer. I have also delivered training sessions for leaders from the local district council.

What's been a highlight during your time at the University of Huddersfield?

I’ve really enjoyed becoming involved with the apprenticeship programme. It’s been incredibly rewarding to get to know both the current students as well as prospective students who are just embarking on their journeys. I’ve also enjoyed getting to know and working alongside some excellent colleagues who teach on the apprenticeship programme.
