Hi, I'm Tofunmi and here are the reasons why I chose my uni accommodation as well as some tips I can share with you to help you make your accommodation decision!
How I made my decision
Choosing my accommodation was a big decision for me because I like my own space and want to avoid confrontation and arguments. I had heard and seen so many horror stories on TikTok about unreliable flatmates, and I wasn’t ready for that. With that in mind, I decided I wanted to live by myself in my first year, so I could meet people I could trust and eventually get a home or flat with them in my second or final year.
This led me to the Hello Student website. Even though it was very last minute, the process was quick and accessible. Their customer service team were really friendly, and there was no deposit required, which was a big relief.
Kingsmill Studios
I chose Kingsmill Studios, which is located opposite the Haslett building, right over the bridge. It’s about a 30-second walk to the University. Thanks to this I’ve never had to worry about being late, and it’s left my mornings completely stress-free.
Some of my favourite things about Kingsmill Studios are the gym, cinema room and lounge. Having a gym close by is so convenient and has helped me with my fitness journey. The cinema room has become a great hangout spot for movie nights with my friends, and the lounge is packed with entertainment like card games, a foosball table, a TV and a vending machine stocked with snacks and ramen.

“These little things have made Kingsmill Studios more like a home to me."
Another thing I enjoy about living here is the themed parties and little things the Studios provide, for example for autumn term there was free cake at reception.
For Christmas there were parties, movie nights, and also free hot chocolate and snacks provided. Bills are also included so you don’t have to worry about a fluctuation in the rent and it’s very safe due to the security protocols that have been put in place.

My advice to you when looking at accommodation
Some of my top tips to keep in mind when looking for accommodation are:
- Location matters: accommodation close to the University is worth the money. It shouldn’t be more than 20 minutes away in order to keep up your motivation to attend everyday and being closer to campus makes it much easier to go to society events and activities.
- Think about what is important to you and what your needs and boundaries are. If you’re good with conflict resolution and want to save money a shared flat would be your best pick.
- Check what’s included in your rent - common things to check for are bills, what services and facilities you get access to, and some accommodation have cashback offers running at points during the year.
- Always check out the accommodation in person, don’t rely solely on reviews and pictures. By going to look around you can see what your room could look like and get a feel for the area around your accommodation.
- Have backups in case your first choice doesn’t work out.
I hope this helps and good luck!
