Exploring the UK from Yorkshire

Khadija El Malki
MSc Clinical Pharmacy Practice
Hello! I’m Khadija, and I am an international Chevening scholar from Morocco.
Studying at the University of Huddersfield has been a rewarding experience for me, not only academically but also personally. During the Christmas holidays, I decided to make the most of this time by exploring the UK and discovering more about its cities, culture, and history. What made this journey special is that all my travels started from Huddersfield, the town I now call home as a student.
Together with my friends, who are also Chevening Scholars from different universities, we planned a 10-day Christmas journey across the UK. From festive markets and historic cities to unforgettable cultural experiences, this trip allowed me to see the UK from a completely new perspective.
Christmas Magic in York
Our journey began in York, and it was the perfect place to start during the Christmas season. The city felt magical, with festive lights, a lively Christmas market, and live outdoor music filling the streets.
We enjoyed traditional winter food, listened to music, danced together, and soaked in the joyful Christmas atmosphere. York’s historic charm combined with the festive spirit made it an unforgettable experience and a beautiful introduction to our holiday.

Exploring Leeds: Shopping and City Life
The next day, we travelled to Leeds, where we explored the city centre, the old town, and walked along the river. Leeds felt vibrant and dynamic, offering a mix of modern city life and historical character.
As it was still Christmas time, visiting the Christmas market was a must. We enjoyed festive sweets, warm drinks, and the lively atmosphere while discovering different parts of the city.

Seeing Huddersfield Through New Eyes
Before continuing our journey, we dedicated a day to exploring Huddersfield itself. As students, we often focus on lectures and deadlines, so taking time to explore the town felt refreshing.
We visited Greenhead Park, walked along the canal, and spent time near the river. Seeing Huddersfield from a traveller’s perspective helped me appreciate its peaceful atmosphere, green spaces, and beauty even more.

Manchester: History, Free Walking Tours, and Hidden Stories
From Huddersfield, we travelled to Manchester, a city rich in history and innovation. To explore it properly, we joined a free walking tour that we booked online, which was a great option for us as students.
During the tour, we learned about The Midland Hotel, a place of major historical importance. It was here, in 1904, that Rolls and Royce met for the first time, marking the beginning of what would become one of the most iconic luxury car brands in the world!
We also visited the Britannia Hotel, another historic building, and learned how it survived a fire during World War 2 thanks to the bravery and quick actions of its workers.
Another interesting detail we discovered was that some streets near Chinatown are often used for filming scenes set in New York, due to their similar architectural style.

Liverpool: Culture, Sunset Views, and Football History
We then travelled to Liverpool, which felt immediately different to Manchester. While Manchester reflects industry, Liverpool has a strong cultural and artistic identity.
The Beatles are everywhere, giving the city a unique atmosphere. We also explored several pop-culture shops, including a large Harry Potter shop, which is a dream for Potterheads. There were also shops inspired by anime and iconic series and films such as One Piece and Wednesday.
One of my favourite moments in Liverpool was watching the sunset near the river. As a sunset lover, this peaceful moment was truly special. We also explored the city centre, enjoyed Italian coffee, and went shopping.
A major highlight was visiting Anfield Stadium. Thanks to student discounts, we were able to join a full stadium tour. We learned about the clubs history, saw the pitch from above, visited the changing room, explored the museum, and discovered the history of women's football. Seeing the trophies, old kits, and learning about the players made the experience unforgettable. I even bought some original souvenirs from the official shop.

Belfast: History, Titanic, and Natural Wonders
To conclude the journey, we flew to Belfast for a three-day experience. On our first full day, we joined another free tour, guided by a local woman with deep knowledge of Belfast's history. We visited landmarks, such as the Opera House and the famous Crown Bar, one of the oldest pubs in the city.
Later, we visited the Titanic Belfast Experience, which was one of the most emotional and memorable parts of the trip. The exhibition takes visitors through sets of the Titanic, the journey itself, and the tragedy that followed, using immersive and interactive displays. The exhibition also shows real artefacts from the Titanic and explains how the tragedy changed maritime safety forever.
On our final day, we travelled outside Belfast to visit Game of Thrones filming locations, ending at the Giant's Causeway. Standing in front of this incredible natural formation was breath-taking and made me reflect on the beauty and power of nature.

Reflections on my Holiday
This 10-day journey was more than just travelling; it was a meaningful learning experience filled with culture, history, friendship, and personal growth. Starting from Huddersfield, I was able to explore different parts of the UK affordably and create memories that will stay with me forever.
As an international student and Chevening Scholar, these experiences helped me feel more connected to the UK and appreciate its diversity. I would encourage other University of Huddersfield students to explore the UK whenever they can; sometimes the most unforgettable journeys begin right where you are.

Practical Travel Tips for Students Exploring the UK
Based on my experience, here are a few tips that may help other students plan a smooth and affordable holiday:
- Book accommodation early: Holidays are a busy period, and hotels and Airbnb can sell out quickly. Booking early helps secure better prices and availability.
- Plan transport in advance: Train tickets are often cheaper when booked early.
- Consider day trips: Cities like York, Leeds and Manchester can be explored easily in one day, saving accommodation costs.
- Choose open return train tickets: This gives flexibility to return whenever you feel tired, without stress.
- Create a flexible itinerary: Planning helps you stay organised, but leaving room for spontaneity makes the experience more enjoyable.
- Use free walking tours: They are free and provide local insights you won’t easily find online.
- Look for student discounts: Many attractions offer reduced prices for students.
- Balance planning and exploration: Some of the best moments come from simply walking and discovering a city naturally.
