How International Information Day Shaped My Decision

Hi my name is Shufan Javed, and I am an international student from Pakistan.

Before beginning my journey in the UK, I found myself in the position many international applicants can relate to; excited, ambitious, but filled with questions. Among the many steps I took while researching universities, attending an online International Information Day turned out to be one of the most influential.

Weighing My Options and Seeking Reassurance

Although Huddersfield was already one of my leading choices, I was not prepared to make such a crucial decision without clarity. My academic background was rooted in biology and medical sciences during my O-levels and A-levels and choosing to move into computing marked a considerable transition. While this shift was driven by genuine interest and long-term goals, I needed reassurance that I would not be navigating it alone.

More than Module Titles

I wanted to understand more than just module titles …

How were lectures delivered?

How accessible were tutors?

What academic support systems were in place?

Beyond academics, I was also considering the university’s teaching quality, reputation, student experience, and the practical realities of studying abroad.

The university website provided substantial information, but reading about support is different from experiencing the people behind it. What I was looking for was interaction, an opportunity to ask questions directly and hear responses in real time.

Experiencing the International Information Day

Attending the online International Information Day provided exactly that opportunity. From the outset, the event felt structured, welcoming, and genuinely student centered. The sessions were thoughtfully organised, covering academic delivery, student support services, the Students’ Union, and wider campus life.

What distinguished the experience was its interactivity. There was space for dialogue rather than passive listening. Questions submitted through the chat were addressed clearly and without hesitation, creating an atmosphere that felt open and reassuring. Participating from Pakistan, thousands of miles away, yet still feeling connected to the university community, was particularly significant for me.

Clarity, Confidence and Decision-Making

By the conclusion of the Information Day, the uncertainty I had been carrying began to dissolve. My concerns regarding academic transition, support structures, and student life had been addressed with clarity. More importantly, I felt confident, not just informed, but reassured.

That confidence played a decisive role in confirming Huddersfield as the right choice for me.

A Full-Circle Moment

As I progressed through my degree and entered my second year, I embraced new dimensions of my university journey, joining the Pakistan society and taking on the role of International Student Ambassador. Now, I find myself participating in the very International Information Days that once guided me. Seeing the preparation and dedication behind the scenes has deepened my appreciation for the university’s commitment to international students.

What once felt like an event designed to persuade applicants now feels like something more meaningful; a genuine effort to inform, support, and welcome. My journey has come full circle: from attending with questions and uncertainty, to standing on a panel and offering reassurance to others facing the same decision.

A Final Thought for Future Applicants

If I could offer one piece of advice, it would be this: attend an Information Day and engage fully. Research thoroughly but use the opportunity to ask questions and seek clarity. No question is insignificant when you are making a life-changing decision.

For me, that single online event did more than provide information, it provided confidence. And sometimes, that makes all the difference.
