Joel Proger

Trainee Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering

Hi, my name is Joel Proger and I’m currently studying on the Lifelong Learning CertEd course.

Here at the University of Huddersfield, our Lifelong Learning teacher training courses are designed to equip professionals with the skills, confidence and recognised qualifications they need to inspire learners aged 16 and over.

Whether you're already working in a specialist field – such as construction, engineering, health and social care or beauty - or looking to share your knowledge in subjects like English, maths or social sciences, our flexible, part-time routes into teaching allow you to continue your career while training to make a real difference in education.

From colleges and sixth forms to workplaces and prisons, the Lifelong Learning sector offers a unique and rewarding way to support others on their journey to upskill, retrain or achieve new qualifications.

In this blog, Joel shares his inspiring journey from a career in precision engineering to training the next generation as a Trainee Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering. He reflects on how the Lifelong Learning course has helped him develop a deeper understanding of teaching methods and how he’s successfully balanced the demands of teaching while completing his studies.

Please can you tell us a little bit about yourself and why you decided to teach your chosen subject?

I am a multi-skilled CNC Machinist, trained to operate and edit CNC machines and tooling to produce precise components for various sectors. With a background in precision engineering, I felt inspired to pass my knowledge on to the next generation.

How has the Lifelong Learning course supported you in your teaching journey?

The course has provided me with valuable insights, as well as an understanding of the reasoning behind teaching and learning methods, and how these can be applied in my future career. As a trainee lecturer, I study alongside my teaching timetable, and the course has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to apply what I learn directly in my sessions.

What would you say to someone who is considering studying the Lifelong Learning course?

This is a great course that provides the right tools, support, and understanding of why educators do what we do. It's important to develop knowledge of the reasons behind educational practices, as this directly benefits students. The Lifelong Learning course, along with the tutors, ensures you have all the information and support needed to succeed.

What was the support from your tutors like?

The tutors have given full support and guidance throughout the course. They are very understanding of the fact that we have lives outside the course and are empathetic if additional support is needed.

Can you tell us more about the mentoring you received?

I have received both an educational mentor and a subject specialist mentor to support my development throughout the course. Both have been on hand to offer guidance whenever needed.

What have been your key achievements?

The job is very demanding and has required a significant adjustment from my previous career. One achievement I am proud of is completing all assignments on time while developing and teaching the next generation of engineers.
