Brooke Keyworth
Law LLB(Hons)
Hi, my name is Brooke, and I am a final-year Law student at the University of Huddersfield. In this blog, I’ll be talking about my experience of a University of Huddersfield Open Day and why it helped me make my university decision
Making a university decision
Attending an Open day at the University was really important to me because I really wanted to get a feel for the campus and see all of the facilities it had.
I also thought attending an Open Day was vital so I could meet lecturers and ask any questions I had.
What happens at an Open Day
When you arrive at an Open Day you will be greeted and shown around by Student Ambassadors.
This is a great chance to ask any questions about living at University, how to manage your time, socialising, the town, and about using the facilities, such as the library.
An Open Day can provide an insight into a university that you can’t get when looking online. You get to see the facilities and what they’re like, meet staff and students, and experience the campus.
When I attended the Open Day, I could picture myself there and really took in the environment.

University is more than just a degree
I was shown the Students’ Union, the food areas and coffee counters, the library, the sports facilities, and the designated areas for the law courses including facilities such as the mock courtroom.
After the tour I had all of the information I needed, so my parents and I decided to buy a coffee from the onsite Costa Coffee and took a look around the Students' Union shop.
We also took a walk through the University grounds. When you leave the main building (Student Central), using the exit next to the library, it leads to a bridge over the canal. Although I have lived in Huddersfield all my life, I had never known about this part of the University!
The view is beautiful, and in the hot weather it is great to sit by the canal. Even on the busy days this part of the University still feels so peaceful.

How to prepare for Open Day
Coming to the Open Day gave me all the knowledge and experience that I needed to decide that Huddersfield would be the right fit for me.
I had the confidence to say this was the university I saw myself attending.
Before attending university Open Days, I would advise that you prepare by reading all the information you already have from your research (this may be from the university's website, reviews, UCAS or its social media), and then decide if there is any more information you believe you need, and prepare the right questions to ask.
I recommend attending open days with an open mind.
It is okay to attend as many open days, at as many different universities, as you like - but don’t go to one with the mindset that you will either love it or hate it.
Be passionate about each one, find out as much information as you can and picture yourself there as a student.
Originally, I was determined I would move away from Huddersfield for university. However, attending the Open Day made me realise which university I belonged at and was right for me.

To book a place on the Open Day, I simply did a Google search and there is a section on the University of Huddersfield’s website all about Open Days .
It gives information about what to expect and how to book which through an easy system that just requires you answer a few questions.
