MA Education (Technology Enhanced Learning)
Hi! I’m Truong-Nam Nguyen, a postgraduate student at the University of Huddersfield, specialising in MA Education (Technology Enhanced Learning). I’m an international student from Vietnam and I’m eager to share with you my wonderful journey at the University of Huddersfield over the past year. I hope you might find some inspiration from my story so far!
My passion for the UK started when I was a child. I was quite lucky to be exposed to the English language, as well as the British style and way of life quite early, mostly through books and films. Gradually, there seemed to be a growing connection between me and this country, and by the end of high school, I became determined to come to the UK to study.
After getting into university in Vietnam, I was majoring in Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Upon finishing my bachelor’s degree, I knew I wanted to progress my academic career by pursuing postgraduate education. Knowing that a Master’s degree only takes one year in the UK, I found it even more appealing to come here.
I first learnt about the University of Huddersfield via an alumnus, who attended MA TESOL. She told me a lot about life in the UK, as well as in Huddersfield, and I was immediately attracted to it. After completing my Bachelor’s degree, I spent a lot of time finding out more about the University of Huddersfield, and I realised that not only does it have a high-quality academic team, but also various exciting extra-curricular activities, such as workshops and day trips. Also, I realised that the tuition fee, supported by scholarships, and living expenses at Huddersfield are quite ideal for an international student, which further consolidated my intention to pursue my MA degree here.
Even though I’m an international student, I found it quite easy to fit in with the way of life in the UK and at the University. Since I’ve always had a passion for British culture and lifestyle, it wasn’t difficult for me to make friends from various countries at the University. However, the biggest challenge for me back then was with my studies. I’d never conducted research before and I found it quite challenging to manage my studies independently (what to learn, how to learn, at what pace etc). However, I was able to receive lots of help from the Academic Team, as well as the Student Support Team. I was strongly supported by my Personal Academic Tutor, who was also a teacher in the School of Education. He gave me lots of useful tips and advice regarding my specialisation. Furthermore, I also got help from the Academic Skills Tutor, who provided me with tutorials consolidating my English language and research skills.

The experience of studying abroad has taught me a lot of things. I’ve learnt how to manage my studies effectively. I used to depend a lot on my teachers to help me with my studies, yet after studying in the UK, I can finally make reasonable decisions for my studies by myself. Thanks to doing research for my assignments, my critical thinking has greatly improved, which I believe will be particularly useful in my future career. I’ve also had the chance to sharpen my time management skills, through having to balance my study life with my everyday life, without support from my family. My experience in the UK has also allowed me to gain a clearer view of my strengths, weaknesses and potential, allowing me to become the best version of myself.
One reason why I would recommend the University of Huddersfield to other Postgraduate students lies within the high quality of the academic programmes offered here. There are a lot of choices for students, all of which tend to dig deep into their respective specialisation; hence, students have the chance to explore whatever they want to with high diversity and professionalism. Furthermore, the University staff are all competent, supportive individuals who are always there for the students. The infrastructure of the University is also a plus point – students can enjoy academic life through using top-notch equipment and facilities. Lastly, the reasonable tuition fees and wide range of scholarships allow international students to pursue their Postgraduate qualifications, while minimising the financial stress as much as possible.
