In this blog, Shamayla Iram-Hussain shares how the MSc in Business Intelligence and Analytics helped her transition from a clinical healthcare background into the world of data analytics. From mastering Python and SQL to building confidence and resilience while balancing study with family life, her story shows the real-world value of a postgraduate qualification at Huddersfield.
What was your favourite module and why?
My favourite module was Data Analysis and Visualisation because it genuinely transformed my confidence and understanding of what I could achieve. Coming from a long clinical healthcare background, stepping into Python coding and working with complex datasets felt daunting at first, but the module was taught in such a clear and detailed way that the progression felt natural.
The lecturer’s thorough approach helped me build strong foundations while encouraging independent thinking. By the end, I was confidently analysing data, producing meaningful visualisations, and uncovering insights I never imagined I’d be able to. This module had a big impact on my future aspirations and strongly influenced my goal of moving into a data analyst role.
What skills did you gain during your MSc?
I developed strong technical skills in Python, SQL, and data visualisation, along with experience analysing and interpreting complex datasets. I also gained confidence in problem-solving, critical thinking, and communicating insights clearly, skills that are essential for any data-driven career.
How did the University help you move forward in your future?
The university gave me more than technical skills, it helped me grow in confidence and resilience and made me realise what I’m capable of, even whilst balancing full-time study, motherhood to three beautiful children, and personal responsibilities. The experience has shaped my sense of direction and has given me the belief I need to move forward into the next chapter of my career.
What are your career aspirations?
My goal is to become a Data Analyst where I can apply the technical skills, problem-solving abilities and real project experience I gained during my MSc. I’m especially interested in roles where I can use data to improve services, support better decision-making, and contribute to meaningful change.
If you’re thinking about your next steps or considering a career change into a data-focused role, our MSc in Business Intelligence and Analytics is designed to help you develop advanced technical skills, gain hands-on experience, and build the confidence to succeed in a data-driven world.
