Katie Boyer
Psychology BSc(Hons)
Hi everyone! I’m Katie, a first-year Psychology student. In this blog, I’ll be taking you through a pretty standard day in my life while studying at the University of Huddersfield.
A good start to the day
I like to start the day early. I wake up around 7am, regardless of when my lectures start. Usually in the mornings I like to get ready for the day, download my lecture slides, read them, and make notes before I go to the lecture on campus. This just helps me feel more productive each day and helps me get a better insight into the content before I’m actually taught it.
Meeting friends for lectures
Most of the time, I have lectures in the Brontë Lecture Theatre, which is only a short walk from my accommodation. Super convenient. Typically, I meet my friends outside, and we go into the lecture together.
Today, I didn’t have any practical sessions or labs, however I had lectures from 9-11am, and then from 4-5pm. My first lecture was from our ‘Introduction to social psychology and personality’ module, and today we learned about the ‘dark triad’ of personality.
After that lecture, I walked back to my accommodation, watched some YouTube videos, and then made some lunch. I completed the multiple-choice quiz for the lecture I had just been to, then I headed into town with my friend to do some Christmas shopping – my favorite thing ever.

Time for some shopping
I bought a few things for my family, and then we went to get a mint hot chocolate from Greggs - highly recommended. When I first came to Huddersfield, I didn’t think there were many good places to shop, but there’s actually a lot more than I first thought.
I absolutely love charity shopping, and there’s SO MANY charity shops in Huddersfield town centre. Sometimes there are pop-up shops in the University, which is good.
On this day, there was also an Urban Outfitters sample sale happening in Student Central, which we both went to look at, and bought a few things from there too. There are always events going on in the Students’ Union like this, which is a good way to spend breaks in between lectures.

Back to study for the afternoon
At this point, it was almost time for my 4pm ‘Introduction to contemporary issues in psychology’ lecture, so we headed back to our accommodation, I got my bag and then went back into Uni for that.
My afternoon lecture was very interesting, so I went home and did some of the recommended reading on Brightspace for about 45 minutes. I didn’t have any assignment work to do this week, so my main focus was just reviewing the content from the lectures and doing some extra reading.

A great way to make new friends
On Mondays, the Football Society meets up to do a fitness class in the University gym, ActiveHud. At 6.30pm, I met my friends, and we walked there together. For the last few weeks, it has been a 30-minute spin class, which isn’t too bad. The gym has small studio rooms, which is where we do this each week. I definitely recommend joining a society at uni as it helps you meet new people, and it gives you something fun to do outside of lectures.
I love having time to relax
When I got home, I got in the shower and did my skincare while watching some Gilmore girls on Netflix. I really like that at Uni I have time to chill out in the evening and take some time for myself, which was almost impossible during A-levels.
After the fitness classes, I’m always so hungry, so I always try to make something quick to eat, but still reasonably healthy - this time I made a chicken burrito. I ate that, and then went back into my room to do a quick tidy around and pack my bag for the next day. Then I got into bed and watched some TikTok’s before bed. So yeah – that’s a very typical Monday as a psychology student here at Huddersfield!
