A day in the life of a psychology student

Hi, I’m Rachel and I’m a second year student. I’m going to share with you a typical day on my course, Psychology BSc(Hons).

So, a day in the life of a psychology student usually includes an early start. Often I have early classes, but most of the time this just means that I’ll finish earlier too.

When we do have early starts, coffee is a MUST! I have a travel mug which always gets use during those 9am lectures! And I know what you’re thinking, I have the coolest coffee mug don’t I!

In psychology we do have a lot of lectures but we also have at least one lab session every week, so depending on the day, I will also head over to this.

Lab sessions are because, as you’d expect, psychology involves a lot of numbers and statistics. I actually find statistics really fulfilling when I’m able to actually understand some quite complicated stuff.

In data analysis lab sessions, which I have every week, we work with a statistical programme called SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). This is the easiest way to work with numbers and it’s even more helpful that I could download the programme onto my own laptop just by going onto the Student Hub.

If I ever need assistance, then the library staff are always happy to help. Having the program on my laptop means that I can actually do statistics whilst in bed with a takeaway!

books and and a computer for an assignment

A day in the life of a psychology student also includes making friends with the library, as referencing is an important part of any assignment that I do.

Even though most journals and books can be read online, if you’re like me and need to have a physical book in your hand to read, then the library is the best place to go.

The library offers thousands of books and even better it’s open mostly on a 24/7 basis.

After classes and self-study time in the library, I like to go for food and drinks with some classmates or friends that I have made outside of my course, did someone say Spoons?!

With psychology being such a comprehensive subject, the module leaders encourage students to do extra reading. I like to read, and it is a necessity when assignments need to be written, however if I’m struggling to understand something, I also enjoy watching Youtube videos or look for other interactive ways of improving my knowledge, and this can easily be done towards the end of day just on my phone.

After a full day of Uni, I really love to get back to my flat and settle down for the night (unless it’s a Wednesday, as that’s student night!). I usually make myself a cup of tea (priorities) and a hot meal. Most of the time my flatmates are in the kitchen, so it’s really nice to come home and talk about my day with my friends. Uni is great for making friends, and seeing my friends help me keep a good balance between study and some down time.
