ARCHITECTURE (INTERNATIONAL) (RIBA PART 1) BA(HONS)

Hi, I'm Habibah and I'm just finishing my first year at the University of Huddersfield. I study Architecture (International) (RIBA Part 1) BA(Hons).

What my typical day looks like

Hi, my name is Habibah. I’m a first year architecture student at the University of Huddersfield and today I'm going to share a day in my life at uni.

Starting the day

I start my day by waking up early at 7.00am. I usually get dressed and ready by 8.30am, which is when I take the train to commute to Huddersfield for my first lecture at 10.00am.

The train normally arrives at 9.00am. Luckily the train station is quite close to university campus so it only takes around 10 minutes to walk there.

I’m usually early so I’ll spend some time refreshing myself with the content from previous lecture, or meeting friends before the lecture starts to get a coffee from Student Central. It also sells iced coffees, teas and hot chocolates along with bakery goods and snacks.

My lecture lasts around one hour. We usually get a break at 11.30am for around 15 minutes.

When we get back from break, we usually do a lot of design work, developing our architecture skills and doing the work our lecturers set us.

Lunch is at 1.00pm and lasts an hour. During this time me and my friends usually go across campus to Student Central to the Students' Union shop for a meal deal and bring it back to the studio to eat.

The studio also has a kitchen, so many students heat up their lunch or make food there so they don’t need to travel around campus and can save a bit of money.

There are also other places to eat in Student Central, so there's lots of choice.

Most of my classes take place in Barbara Hepworth Building which is quite close to the Jo Cox Building which has Muslim prayer rooms. After we finish eating we go to pray there.

Once we finish it is usually time for the next class. This class is two hours long and we learn a lot about how to draw, including shading techniques and model-making skills.

These sessions are a lot more chilled than the lectures so in this class me and my friends can socialise more whilst also doing our work in class, sharing ideas and helping each other.

Class ends at 4.00pm, but I sometimes stay in the studio to ask questions if I’m stuck on my work, or to continue with my projects for a little longer. Then I either stay at university or head home.

If I stay at the university for a couple of hours more, my friends and I might decide to order food from nearby.

Some places we like are Pan Asian which is halal and suitable for vegetarians, so most people can eat from here. Another good halal place is K-Town Chicken.

After eating and doing more work it’s time to commute back home. I either go home by car or on train depending on how late it is - most times I go by car as it's quicker and easier after a long day.

I hope you enjoyed this blog post about how my day usually goes as a student at Huddersfield, and I hope this gave you a clear insight into how university students spend their day around campus!
