MSc Public Health

Hello! I'm Sanjida, currently pursuing a Master's in Public Health at the University of Huddersfield. I have a background in Hospitality Business Management, completing my undergraduate studies in 2021.

After graduating from the University of Huddersfield in 2021, I ventured into the corporate world as an administrator at Zenith Vehicles. Although I enjoyed the experience, I realised my true calling lay in a career where I could contribute to community well-being. After thorough research, the Public Health programme at Huddersfield caught my attention, focusing on addressing health inequalities in various communities.

Choosing to leave a stable job and revert to student life was a challenging decision, but my passion for making a meaningful impact propelled me forward. Having had a positive undergraduate experience at the University of Huddersfield, I eagerly returned for my Master's, and the offer of a scholarship further solidified my choice.

Differences between undergraduate and postgraduate studies

Now that I'm back in the academic groove, let me spill the details on how postgraduate life differs from an undergraduate one:

Diverse Dynamic:

My postgraduate cohort displays a diverse dynamic compared to my undergraduate peers. While many undergraduates often transition directly from A-levels or college, my Master's classmates already boast established careers and deep knowledge in their respective fields. The varied experiences within the group have fostered valuable connections and enriched my learning.

Intensity of the Course:

Transitioning from undergrad to postgrad is like shifting into higher gear, studies amplify as does the academic intensity. With an increased credit load, the course is designed to deliver a substantial qualification within a condensed timeframe, significantly enhancing one's professional prospects.

More Independent Studying:

Postgraduate studies, geared toward older and more experienced students, often entail a higher degree of independent study. The emphasis on independent research becomes particularly evident during the summer months, with tasks such as dissertations requiring solitary work without regular lectures or seminars.

Top Tips

For those contemplating a return to university for postgraduate studies or progressing from undergraduate to postgraduate, I recommend thoroughly researching your chosen field, understanding the course dynamics, and embracing the potential for independent study. The investment in time and effort will undoubtedly pay off.

For fellow international students contemplating a similar academic journey, my advice is to immerse yourself in the cultural diversity, engage actively with the community, and leverage the support available from tutors and staff at the university. They're like mentors guiding you through the academic maze.

Reflection

Reflecting on my initial months back, it has been a period of acquainting myself with new faces, managing a more demanding class schedule, and delving into extensive readings. Yet, the town's serene ambiance and the well-structured course contribute to a positive academic experience. The relaxed charm of Huddersfield alleviates the stresses of academic rigor, and the support from the faculty creates a sense of camaraderie.

In conclusion, what I love about Huddersfield is its dynamic and inclusive atmosphere, where academic challenges are met with support, and the town's charm adds a unique dimension to student life. It's a place where my academic journey feels not just worthwhile, but truly enriching.

I enjoy it here so much I couldn’t wait to come back and start a postgraduate course!
