Me and Huddersfield Students' Union

Student chelsea in a theatre environment

Chelsea Stevenson

Final year student

Hi, my name is Chelsea, I am a final year student, and here is how I use the Students' Union at the University of Huddersfield.

What can the SU do for you?

My main involvement with the SU comes from all the clubs and societies they have to offer. There is a club or society catered for all interests, from 3D printing to Taylor Swift.

Musical Theatre Society

I am currently a part of the Musical Theatre Society, which involves singing, dancing, acting, everything Musical Theatre related.

One thing I love about this society is the end of year showcase, which gives us the opportunity to perform a wide variety of musical numbers in front of family, friends, or any students who would like to support us.

At the beginning of the year, we all audition and after roles have been casted, we attend weekly rehearsals for our end of year show. I have been involved in this society for three years now and my roles have included numbers from musicals such as Wicked, Grease and Dear Evan Hansen.

But on the off chance that you cannot find a society that interests you, the SU can help you start your own.

Welcome week is the perfect way to dive right into the fun side of student life. With events such as Freshers fair, which allows you to meet all of the clubs and societies available to you, live and in person.

Welcome Week and Refreshers'

Another thing I love about the Students' Union (SU) is the Welcome week and Refreshers'.

There are many events during Freshers' week, but my favourite has to be the HudCrawl. This is a student bar crawl, hosted by the SU. You pay around £12, collect your unique HudCrawl t-shirt and wearing this gets you free entry to all the bars and clubs on the crawl.

In my opinion it is an absolute must when it comes to choosing Freshers' events to get involved with and is the perfect way to celebrate getting into university. But the best part is, there is more than one HudCrawl each year. As mentioned, the SU runs something called Refreshers, which is basically a Freshers' week for the students who start their courses in January. So, if you are a January starter and are worried about missing some amazing Freshers' events, the SU has got you covered.

There's something on all year round

The SU runs events throughout the academic year, so if bar crawls aren’t really your thing, you can find many other events to get involved with. There are workshops, live showcases for societies, and day trips which have previously included The Deep, York Christmas Markets, and Cinema trips.

As well as the activity side, the SU also run many supportive services for all their students. One of these being the wellbeing support, which is available for all students. I have used this service myself and find it not only useful but also flexible. You can receive up to 12 wellbeing sessions each year, which can be spaced out in any way you choose, making it flexible for students like me, who’s availability is often unpredictable. I’ve found this service really useful and easy to fit around my studies, as well as my part time job.

So to conclude, the SU has supported me in so many ways, since I started here in 2020.

Before arriving, I thought I would struggle to make friends, especially because I enrolled during the Covid-19 pandemic, which meant all my classes were online. But the wellbeing support and the wide variety of societies has supported me in stepping out of my comfort zone and making life-long friendships.

I hope it can do the same for you too.
