English Literature and Creative Writing BA(Hons)

Hi, I’m Jenny and I’m a mature student studying English Literature with Creative Writing here at Huddersfield. I live at home, and I commute to university. Read on to find out what a typical day is like for me.

Starting my day

I don’t need an alarm clock as I have four cats, and they wake me up early every day for breakfast. Once they are fed and watered, it’s time for me to get myself ready for the day. After breakfast I'm out of the door to catch the bus. Luckily, it’s only a few steps from my doorstep to the bus stop.

My journey to Huddersfield is approximately an hour. It starts with a short bus ride to my local train station, where I then catch the train into Huddersfield. I make use of this time to prepare for the day.

Today is a day of lectures, so I will go over the slides on Brightspace. This means I’m well prepared for my lectures and I can follow along easily. I arrive early in Huddersfield and use this time to go to Costa for a hot chocolate and to read my set text for The Victorian Literature module.

I have two lectures today. I have one in the morning which is in the Joseph Priestley building. I really like the lecture halls in this building. They are small and intimate, allowing for a bit more of an informal and interactive feel. I like to sit at the front of the lecture hall. I am neurodivergent, so this really helps me stay focused. My course has such knowledgeable lecturers, I want to make the most out of the time I have with them.

Lunch with friends

Today I am meeting friends for lunch. We have lunch in Student Central, where there is always something to cater to your tastes, and it’s all reasonably priced. They have everything from pizza to salads. The group of friends I meet are other mature students who I met while completing my access course in college. We are all on different courses but still make the time to meet up once a week for a catch-up. This is important to me as it is great for my mental health. This group of friends is part of my support network at university. They are always there for a chat, support and advice, and most importantly a laugh.

Keeping those friends from college has made such a great support network for me - here we are at lunch!

My favourite place on campus

After lunch we all headed to my favourite place on campus, the library. If we are organised we will book a group study room. However, today we weren't organised, but that's ok as there are plenty of tables to sit around. We bring whatever papers we must read or projects we are working on. There is something brilliant about us all being together again and working comfortably in silence. I always tend to get lots done in these sessions.

Ending the day

Then it is time for a coffee and a sweet treat in Café Central. We use this opportunity for one final chat before we all head off to our final lessons of the day. I am in the Oastler Building for my final lecture. This is another building on campus I really like. I love the rooms with the giant windows. The views you get of Huddersfield are amazing.

When the lecture is over, I head to the train station for the journey home. I pop on my headphones and listen to a podcast to relax after a busy day. This is the start of my evening wind down. When I get home, I cook tea, relax and watch a film before going to bed to do it all again in the morning.
