Facing Freshers!

Although a sports hall worth of stalls may seem overwhelming, the Welcome Festival, formerly known as Fresher’s Fair, is a celebration of university life – showcasing societies, local amenities and exclusive offers! It’s always a good idea to make plans to visit the Welcome Festival with your course mates, in-between your introductory lectures and seminars. The annual event is a great way to break the ice with potential lifelong friends.

Welcome Festival is a must, with freebies and a vast variety of vouchers at every corner. If that’s not enough to persuade you to pop by, Domino’s will be serving up free pizza whilst you decide what societies to join!

Societies are an amazing way to meet like-minded people whom share the same interests as you. At the University of Huddersfield, there are over 90 societies – from drama to radio! If you’re the sporty type, there is the opportunity to join as many sports clubs as you like!

Events such as HudCrawl, HudComedy, #TBT Back to School Party, and HudLive are the perfect opportunity to settle into university life, meet new friends, and make the most of living in a new town. If it wasn’t for HudCrawl, I wouldn’t have met some of my closest friends!

As a music journalism student, HudLive is a dream come true for me. This year the festival will be taking over the town centre – allowing you to see a range of acts from Avelino to Little Comets. BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Charlie Sloth will also be DJ’ing at Five Bar whilst Don Broco make an appearance at Camel Club’s weekly rock night, Bedlam.

I am also not ashamed to say that I’m looking forward to seeing Tinchy Stryder at this year’s #TBT Back to School Party!

This year, there are also a selection of smaller events which run throughout Freshers’ Week. These include: Futsal Torment, Food and Thrift, Basketball Showcase, Sunset Silent Disco, Gospel Concert, Roller Disco, and more!

If any of the events mentioned sound like your cup of tea, make sure to check out the Students’ Union website for more information!

Huddersfield's train station has one particular employee who I'm fond of, Felix... the railway cat. Also, I've no doubt that my name has the most unique spelling.
