ARCHITECTURE BA(HONS)
Hi guys! My name is Muryum. I’m in my first year studying Architecture at the University of Huddersfield.
I usually wake up around 8am, get ready and pack my bag for the day, depending on what classes I have. Then it’s about a seven-minute walk to uni from my accommodation.
This is great because I can come back to my room if I need to get things throughout the day, and of course, being close to uni means it’s easier to get to class on time.
I’ll have Design Studio at 9am, which takes place in the architecture studio in the Barbara Hepworth Building. I love this building, there’s so much space and natural light which gets me in the headspace to do my work.
DS is a three-hour class, so I like to sit at a big table with my friends and get all my equipment out for it. Currently, we’re doing a group project, so we debate different parts of the design and sketch out our ideas. It’s a lot of fun to immerse ourselves in the subject for a few hours.
Then, I have a break for lunch, which I usually spend in the Students’ Union with my friends.
There are many options in terms of food on campus, like the Central Café and SU shop, and they even have vegan and halal options!
Me and my friends love to get ramen from the shop, as there’s quite a varied selection. Sometimes we’ll go out to eat at a Pan Asian restaurant only two minutes away (the bao buns are sooo good).
If it’s a Friday then we have the option to attend Jummah prayer in the Jo Cox More in Common Centre afterwards, one of my favourite places on campus because of the interior design and calm environment.
After lunch, I’ll have a technology lecture, which is usually in the Ramsden Building.
This class is useful as it shows us the different aspects of designing and constructing, which is essential for our group project. We take notes and then get together later in the week to discuss how to progress with our house design.
After my classes, I love to get a session in at the Active Hud gym. The fact that it’s on campus makes it so I have no excuse to miss it!
If I haven’t gone to the gym, my friends and I will sit in the Students’ Union for a while just to talk and chill.
Then it’s back to my flat, to get the post gym protein in. Since moving out, I’ve started meal prepping, and this saves me so much time throughout the week, and I really recommend it.
One thing I really like about the campus is the fact that there are so many spaces to study, like the Oastler Building and all the library rooms. On the days when we don’t have classes, we’ll book a study room and work through our assignments together, this really helps me keep on top of my work.
At home, I’ll spend some time on work as well as on my society. I recently founded the Ramen Society with my friends (yes, we like ramen that much) and we hold events like movie nights and charity fundraisers, so I ensure everything is in place for those.
So yeah, that is a typical day for me at uni. It can get busy, but thankfully I have the weekend to basically chill and do nothing lol :)
