SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY BSC(HONS)

Hi I'm Neva- a second year Speech and Language Therapy student from Ireland.

It's hot chocolate season!

The cold weather and the shorter day are tough to get through each winter, but the colder it is, the better the hot chocolate tastes! This winter my flat mates and I have been visiting cafés in Huddersfield and decided on our top three.

We’ve ranked each café based on its hot chocolate, snacks and over all vibe, but I think all three places are cafés you should definitely visit when you have a big gap between lectures.

1) The Turntable Coffee and Vinyl

The Turntable Coffee and Vinyl is a bright and bustling café in Huddersfield town centre decorated with paintings from local artists and range of vinyls that you could buy alongside your coffee.

It offers a variety of sweet treats that will satisfy any sugary cravings. The staff were lovely and it was a short wait to get our drinks.

The café is the perfect space for some revising with just enough background noise to keep you focused.  Our hot chocolate had a generous amount of cream and marshmallows.

I think the phrase “now that really hit the spot” is the best way to describe our reactions to the hot chocolate, although we might be a bit biased because it was a particularly cold and rainy evening. If you ever plan on visiting, I recommend trying their blondies, but maybe not alongside the hot chocolate unless you have the fiercest sweet tooth.

2) Espresso Corner

Espresso Corner is an appropriately named café that sits on the corner of Kirkgate and Wood Street. This cosy café is perfect place to capture an aesthetic picture for your Instagram story.

'Aesthetic’ is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Espresso Corner. The wooden furniture, the plants, the quirky mugs and art all fit together well to create a cool and vibrant interior. The large windows also add to the ambiance in there.

It’s not all looks though! The hot chocolate was rich and thick with loads of marshmallows. Although we didn’t get any sweet treats they have plenty to choose from. This cosy and quiet café makes a great space to get started on some assignments.

The servers were very friendly, and they even complemented my earrings! I’d recommend this place just for the chats you could have with the barista (and their hot chocolate too of course).

3) Arcade Coffee and Food

Arcade Coffee and Food is bit of a hidden gem. Despite it being tucked away in Byram Arcade, almost all of the tables were occupied.  Its bustling energy makes a lovely place to catch up with friends.  We had to wait a little bit for a table but this café is very popular for a reason. The food and the décor would suit any Instagram grid.

We visited Arcade Coffee and Food close to deadline season, so we swapped out our regular hot chocolate for a much-needed Mocha. This Mocha was nice and sweet, and gave me enough caffeine to finish two out of my three remaining assignments.

Although we didn’t get to try the food, as we were busy meeting deadlines, the plates that were carried by us looked absolutely delicious. The minute I get the chance, I’m running back to try the Turkish eggs.

These cafes are all within walking distance of the uni so I really recommend visiting them if you ever have a free hour and crave a hot drink. I know I’m going to become a regular at these cafes and eat an abnormal amount of their pastries!
