Beth Ravenscroft

DIGITAL MARKETING BSC(HONS)

Beth is a third year Digital Marketing student who visited the University of Huddersfield for an Open Day before making it her first choice.

The start of a new adventure

I’m Beth, a Digital Marketing student at the University of Huddersfield.

I’m from a small village in Yorkshire, and moved around an hour away to study at Huddersfield. Although I didn’t move far, I had never visited the town before, so moving here was a new adventure.

There are so many factors to consider when choosing your university, such as the location, the campus, the course modules, the accommodation and the general feel of the place. It is a big decision to make in Sixth Form, but Open Days are available for this very reason.

I found out so many things on the Open Day that I hadn’t even thought to consider. It’s also a great way to get help with choosing a course, because the lecturers help to bring the content to life, which is much more insightful than reading short descriptions online.

Visit brings research to life

I had read about the Digital Marketing BSc(Hons) course at Huddersfield, researched the area, and seen pictures online. However, visiting for real is what motivated me to put Huddersfield as my first choice.

I came to the Open Day by train, which was really straightforward, and the University is just a short walk from the train station.

It was a nice opportunity to walk through the bustling town, and seeing all the shops, cafes, bars and restaurants around me was really exciting. Huddersfield has a vibrant feel, with the modern and vibrant University at the heart of the town.

Coming from a small town, I was in awe of the facilities shown to me during the campus tour.

I saw the range of amazing facilities and outstanding learning areas, such as the library.

I was very nervous, and I attended the Open Day alone, but everyone was extremely welcoming and friendly, and I made friends with other prospective students who also went on to choose Huddersfield and we stayed in touch.

Inspired to return

My first Open Day visit to Huddersfield was more of an overview. I went on campus tours, saw different types of accommodation and spoke to people on different course stands.

I also learnt about other university essentials, such as student finance and registering with a new GP surgery, which at Huddersfield is located on campus.

I then came back to Huddersfield for an Applicant Visit Day, where I took part in taster sessions for my course, met my future lecturers and showed my parents the accommodation I had seen previously.

It was exciting to show them everything I had fallen in love with about Huddersfield, and they were also so excited for me. As I took all of this in, I remember feeling that I could really see myself living, studying and being happy in Huddersfield.

The opportunity to attend an Open Day really gave me the chance to get a feel for the University, but also allowed me to speak with a number of University teams and get answers to any questions.

Valuable information

I spoke with the Students’ Union about joining societies, student finance about budgeting and paying rent for the first time, current students about their experience studying here and being on the course.

Open Days are the best way to get an all-round view of what life is going to be like, and all the benefits and exciting opportunities that the University has to offer.

I still feel the same about Huddersfield as I did on the first day I visited, and studying here is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I couldn’t see myself anywhere else, and I wouldn’t change anything about my experience at university so far.

Advice for attending Open Days

My biggest piece of advice for Open Day trips would be to go prepared with a list of questions. Here are some examples for different teams at the University.

The course team:

  • What do you look for in a personal statement?
  • What kind of assignments will you be asked to do?

The accommodation:

  • What is included in the costs? (Such as bills, do you need a deposit etc?)
  • How many people per flat, how many bathrooms?

The Students’ Union:

  • What sports and societies are available?
  • Are there any jobs or volunteering opportunities on campus?

Thank you for reading this blog. I wish you the best of luck in your search for the university that is right for you. If you’re considering Huddersfield, I hope you’ve had a glimpse of how great it is!

Remember to book your place at Open Day and find out what Huddersfield has to offer for yourself!
