Hey, I'm Freya, a first year Engineering student at the University of Huddersfield.
Looking for the best spots on campus? Whether you're looking to study, relax, hang out or just grab a bite, here are my top three places you won't want to miss!
1. Student Central
The sofa area on the fifth floor of Student Central is my favourite social space on campus – it's got the perfect blend of comfort and atmosphere for relaxation or a good chat.
It’s a place where I can unwind between classes or meet up with friends. The comfy sofas help me take a break from the hustle of campus life. There’s always such a mix of students to strike up conversations with; this is actually how I met a lot of my university friends!
Whether you use it for casual catch-ups, group study sessions, or simply enjoying a chill moment, the sofa lounge has a laid-back vibe that makes it feel like a home away from home.
2. The Library
The Library is my favourite study space on campus because it provides the perfect environment for focused, productive work. As someone with ADHD, the quiet, distraction-free atmosphere lets me immerse myself in my studies.
It has designated silent study areas with 'calm zones', group study hubs and individual desks to cater to different study needs. The ‘quick search’ tool helps you easily locate books on any subject, which is very useful if you’re researching a niche topic.
Overall, the library's calm environment, resources and structure make it my top choice for academic productivity.
3. Students' Union Shop
The students' Union Shop is my favourite food and drink outlet because it offers everything I need in one convenient place. The meal deal is a real highlight, providing a tasty and affordable lunch option that includes a main, drink, and snack—perfect for busy days between classes. I love the variety of hot and fresh food available, especially the bakery section.
The shop also offers a great selection of drinks, including a hot drinks station with alternative milks available (if that’s your thing) and they also offer cold and refreshing drinks to keep me energised throughout my day.
They have a great variation of snacks from healthy to sweet; my personal highlight is the veggie straw crisps which have become my go to, but if you have a sweet tooth there are plenty of treats to choose from too.
What makes it even better is the shop also stocks stationery and Uni merch, so whether you’ve lost your pen or you’re feeling like repping the University on a hoodie, the Students' Union Shop is the ultimate all-in-one stop shop for students.
No matter what you're in the mood for, these spots are sure to make your University experience even better. So grab your friends, explore, and enjoy all that campus has to offer!
