Hi – My name is Caroline and I’m a research student at Huddersfield. University study is a great way to broaden your knowledge and allow you to develop new skills in critical thinking. Studying for a taught or research degree will give you the ability to delve into a subject and really pick it apart. However, there are also other ways that a university education allows you to learn and engage.
One way is through access to external speakers and events that take place in conjunction with the University. Attending these are a great way to enrich your studies, and often gain new knowledge in areas outside of your degree subject.
The University is host to many such events and talks from the annual Harold Wilson lecture to the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the PGR conference, to dedicated talks at key times throughout the year such as International Women’s Day and Black History Month.
For the past two years, I've been lucky enough to attend the annual ‘NotWestminster’ conference held at the University of Huddersfield, and let me tell you, it has been an absolutely incredible experience! This event brings together passionate individuals from all over the UK, and from all backgrounds, to engage in thought-provoking discussions about local politics. It’s about real issues that affect real people and how each and every one of us can make a difference.
At the conference, I had the pleasure of listening to quick-round talks and attending workshops where I gained invaluable insights into fantastic local projects and educational programs in the region. It’s a free event that provides a wealth of knowledge about the power of voting and why it matters. It's especially useful for students interested in current afairs or law, but honestly, it's a fantastic learning opportunity for all students.
Attending this event has certainly impacted the way I teach (as part of my course) and the way I work with younger people. Plus, the University of Huddersfield has some fantastic community links, which have led me to attend other inspiring events like embroidery workshops hosted by Woven Kirklees, which have sparked my creativity and even helped me develop new skills!
I've been so inspired by all of these events that I've even started organizing events for other students too, working more closely with the Students’ Union to bring in external industry speakers, workshop providers, and trips that enhance the learning experience for everyone involved.
If you're looking for another way to enhance your university experience, learn something new, and make a difference in your community, keep an eye out for all the different opportunities that take place at the University and in Huddersfield.
