Where I Love to Shop in Huddersfield

Psychology with Criminology BSc

Hi! I’m Lia, a third year Psychology with Criminology student at the University of Huddersfield. I am originally from Goole, which is around an hour away from Huddersfield, so I had to relocate to Huddersfield for university.

The move from Goole to Huddersfield meant that I would have to find new places to shop and figure out the best ways to get bargains in a new town. I have created this blog post to give you some of the tips and tricks I have learnt and tell you about the places I love to shop in Huddersfield!

One of the good things about Huddersfield is the large number of shops that cover all of your needs. These range from clothes shops to food shops, to everything in between. I’m going to tell you a little bit about different shops in each of these categories, and the way I try to find bargains in each!

One of the main things I was worried about when coming to university was food shops. I had never had to do a big food shop for myself before and knowing where to go for it to get the best deals and make it easier for myself was a big worry.

After trial and error at different places, I now always do my main food shop at Tesco. I do delivery orders from Tesco every two weeks so that I don’t have to carry loads of heavy bags through town, and not only is this way easier for me, but it is also cheaper in the long run, especially because I have a Clubcard.

Having a Tesco Clubcard is an absolute lifesaver because it allows you to save on everyday purchases. You also receive coupons and other discounts and can save up your points and pay with those when you have enough. I would definitely recommend all students get one!

I often find myself making a trip to Kingsgate shopping centre during breaks between lectures.

In between Tesco orders, I will sometimes run out of things such as fruit and veg and need to get some more. To do this, I will usually go to Lidl. Everyone already knows about what amazing value Lidl is, and there happens to be two in Huddersfield!

They are both very easy to get to from town, and very cheap for students to shop at. I definitely recommend doing some shopping at Lidl while you are a student to save a little bit of money and still get good quality food and value for your money.

While I go to Tesco or Lidl for all of my food shopping, I get my other everyday essentials (shampoo and conditioner, cleaning supplies, toothpaste etc.) from B&M. Would I even be a 20-year-old woman if I didn’t love B&M? You can get just about anything in there, and at such a good price.

Of course, the only issue with shopping at B&M is you never just stick to your list when you go in there – you go in for a toothbrush and come out with everything but. There are two B&Ms in Huddersfield, one of which is right around the corner from the University, which is definitely very handy!

As well as shopping for essentials such as food and toiletries, Huddersfield is really good for other kinds of shopping, which is definitely something I love to do. I was so excited when I found out that Huddersfield had a Primark – being from a small town we didn’t have one where I grew up, and I was so happy to be living so close to one.

As well as Primark, there are quite a lot of other clothing stores in Huddersfield, particularly in the Kingsgate Shopping Centre, including New Look and River Island.

Huddersfield also has other popular shops including Waterstones, The Body Shop, TK Maxx and HMV.

The best way that I have found to get discounts at these stores is by downloading and using UniDAYS and Student Beans every time I buy anything at any of these stores. These apps have student discounts for a large amount of chain stores, and it really helps to save money.

If chain stores aren’t your thing, Huddersfield also boasts a lot of different charity shops. These include Oxfam, the British Heart Foundation and Barnardo’s, among others. These shops are good for everything from clothes and shoes to books and games, and I love going on little charity shop outings when I have breaks from university.

While you are at university, there is a fantastic shop on campus at the Students’ Union. I love going there in between my lectures to get a meal deal, or even just some chocolate or sweets to snack on while I do my work.

The Students’ Union shop also sells things such as the University of Huddersfield hoodies, t-shirts and lanyards, as well as some stationary bits. It is very handy to have on campus!

As well as all of the different kinds of shops, Huddersfield town also has many other things to do, such as bars, restaurants and clubs.

One of my favourite places to go out is Revolution, because of the really good student discount deals that you can get on food and drinks. Rhubarb also has very good discounts on drinks and is across the road from the University. Also across the road from the uni is one of the two Wetherspoons in town, which is handy if you want to grab a bite to eat after uni.

If you ever wanted to get out of the town, there is a big train station which makes it very easy to get to other nearby cities, including Leeds and Manchester. I would recommend getting a student rail card to make the journeys cheap as well as easy - a train to Leeds from Huddersfield costs around £5 with a rail card and takes only 20 minutes, and Manchester is around £10 and takes only 30 minutes. It’s ideal!
