Shurie's experience at the university

Why I chose this course ? 

I originally did an apprenticeship at the UK National Physical Laboratory (NPL) where I worked in the Electrochemistry and Gas Metrology for 2 years (one year in each group). Upon completing of that program, I realised I wanted to pursue further education. I started looking at foundation courses and liked the facilities of Huddersfield which was the main attribute that attracted me. After I completed the foundation year, I then went on to the Mechanical Engineering course.

Placement Experience:

Doing an apprenticeship I already had a taste of what working in industry felt like and because of that I knew a placement was something I wanted to go for. We are lucky that we have such an enthusiastic and supportive placement team, throughout my second year they helped me re-organise my CV and gave me interview advice. I was lucky enough to end up getting an offer at Parker Hannifin within the Engine & Mobile Division as a Research and Development Engineer (Media Test Engineer) in which I’ve been able to gain a lot of experience on working on complex hydraulic rigs as well as develop my networking and interpersonal skills.

Things to do at Huddersfield:

There’s an overwhelming number of societies you can take part in and if one doesn’t exist you can always make your own. There are also other ways you can get involved at the university like becoming a student ambassador which is a really good way of meeting people who are in your department and course and engaging with the public.

 

Advice for new students starting

The biggest advice I can give is don’t take things for granted and don’t leave things to the last minute, whether its assignments or revision, make a plan for it. Don’t be afraid to speak up for yourself, the lecturers are here to support you and if have questions about anything you will find support.
