University Social Life

Despite all the jokes about student culture, your university social life won’t necessarily revolve around drinking…

It’s definitely not a lie that a lot of student culture and social events can be centred around drinking.  However, if you’re not a big fan of drinking, there are plenty of other events, societies and activities to get involved with!

It’s always worth checking out the events hosted by the University, or the Students’ Union. There are great events such as HudLive for example, which are centred around music rather than a pub crawl. Keeping an eye on the student calendar is a great idea. Here you’ll find events such as film festivals, food festivals, as well as many art and fashion shows!

Additionally, not everything you do has to be a huge event whilst you’re at University. Many of my friends often host their own film nights which is especially great if you’re living in student halls and you’ll get to meet new people.

Huddersfield also hosts many amazing cafes and inexpensive restaurants, many of which offer student discounts. Going out for lunch in-between lectures, as well as grabbing a low-key dinner together as a group is something I’ve frequently done with my friends and it’s a great way to spend time together. (As well as helping you get to know Huddersfield town centre!)

And of course, there are many societies at the University of Huddersfield from sports to technology to art. The societies themselves often have activities that are specific to your course in addition to social events, so you’ll never be left out as there’s plenty of activities to suit everyone. You don’t have to join the specific society for your course either; the many societies at the University of Huddersfield are a great way to learn a new skill or enjoy a hobby during your time off too!

University life is made up of such a diverse range of people with all kinds of interests so don’t worry; you’ll always find a way to join in and meet people with shared interests.
