Computer Science with Foundation Year BSc(Hons)

Hey everyone, my name is Tofunmi and I'm currently a Computer Science student in my foundation year.

I've written this blog talking about the process and why I chose this course.

Choosing a course started with me reflecting in the summer of Year 12. Prior to that, I hadn’t really pinpointed what I wanted to do.

To gain clarity, I decided to write a list which included my my interests, passions and strengths, and that gave me a framework to work with. Through this, I discovered my interest lay in becoming a technical writer, and to get into that I needed a background in computer science.

Why Huddersfield stood out to me

When choosing a university, Huddersfield stood out to me from the beginning. I first encountered the University through an Open Day, and what struck me most was the welcoming atmosphere.

It was very calming, and I was also impressed by the fact that it was a TEF gold-rated university. It felt like a place where I could thrive. On top of that, the staff kept in touch and answered all the queries I had and hosted multiple Applicant Visit Days, and that gave me more clarity.

Another factor that attracted me to Huddersfield was its strong employability record, particularly the emphasis on placements.

I knew that to make the most of my degree, gaining real-world experience was essential. The opportunity to do placements during my course gave me confidence that I was making the right choice for my future career. I could see that the University not only focused on academic learning but also on preparing students for the professional world.

The facilities at Huddersfield were an attractive feature to me. I really liked the library, course level facilities like workspaces and labs, there’s even a museum on-campus (Heritage Quay)! I was impressed.

On top of that, I love the town as it’s surrounded by nature and greenery and it’s also close to major cities like Leeds, York and Manchester etc.

One thing I’ve learned since starting my course is that it’s okay to feel out of your element sometimes.

Imposter syndrome is something I’ve faced more than once, but rather than seeing it as a barrier, I’ve learned to see it as a sign of growth.

As Salem King says: “Imposter syndrome is a high-quality problem,” meaning that it’s a natural part of pushing past your comfort zone. It’s been a challenge, but it’s also been a sign that I’m doing the right things to grow both personally and academically.
