Education (Teaching and Learning) MA - Masters

Hi, I’m Neha and I’m a postgraduate student from India, and I’m studying for a Master’s Degree in Education.

Have you chosen Huddersfield as your university to pursue your studies? Then, I must assure you that you have a great start to a fabulous life ahead of you. Being an international student, I know the fears, anxieties and worries that you bring to your first week, and to put your mind at ease, I have these few tips to do in your first week at Huddersfield and even before you start your classes at the University.

Here are my top 5 things to do during your first week at Huddersfield:

Get Yourself Registered

Now that you have your BRP and your student ID and have registered at the University, then there are three things you would need to do upfront for it to be easier for you in the comings days. First register at the University Health Centre, second have a bank account opened and third, if you looking for a part time job, call HMRC and register for your National Insurance Number so you can work in the UK.

Get Involved

If you think homesickness is going to creep in soon, then I will have to reveal a secret that works as a remedy for homesickness. Join the Global Student societies, where you will meet people from the same country as you and feel like you are at a home away from home. Keep yourself updated with the events and join in with them as much as possible. Being a member of Global Societies will definitely give you a flavour of your country here on campus at Huddersfield.

Welcome Festival

To make you all accustomed to the University, the Students’ Union organises the Welcome Festival which you definitely do not want to miss. The many different events in the Welcome Festival will make you feel that you belong to a bigger community. And to top it all off, there is a lot of freebies that will be up for grabs! Make the most of it and also get to meet many new friends on the campus.

A day trip round Huddersfield

Before you start with classes at the University, you will definitely want to get familiarised with shops, food joints and places to hang out. The best way to do this is to have a walk around the town and the University to discover things for yourself. You could take your new friends along with you so that you get to know Huddersfield as well as get to interact with your new friends.

 A visit to the Library

Whether you believe it or not this is going to be the place you will spend most of your time at University. A place that you cannot run away from! So getting familiarised with your second home at Huddersfield will take you a long way. Do make time to have a visit to the Library.

These tips have helped me settle in at Huddersfield, and I hope they will help you to have a beautiful start at Huddersfield.

Waiting to meet you all at the University of Huddersfield soon.
