Estelle Mattis

Psychology BSc(Hons)

Hi, I’m Estelle. Right now, I’m a second year student studying Psychology at the University of Huddersfield. My hobbies include anything creative, including art, writing, reading and even gaming!

Growing up in Huddersfield

Having grown up in Huddersfield, the University was always an institution I was aware of. However, until my last year of college it was not something I paid too much attention to.

University Applications

When university applications were all anyone was talking about, I was convinced I wanted to move away from home during my degree. Initially, I applied to Huddersfield as a back-up option. However, as time went on, I had the chance — thanks to the pandemic! — to consider living at home and commuting.

Now, although this narrowed my options down to more local universities, it gave me the opportunity to research further into the University of Huddersfield.

Upon scouring its website and prospectus, and attending Open Days and speaking to students, I found everything, from the modules it offered, to campus, social life and structure were all things I personally found extremely promising. The staff had an infectious passion for their disciplines and it was clear to see the same in their students.

My time so far at Huddersfield

Throughout the time I have spent here, I have not been disappointed. I have found my modules to be incredibly interesting and thorough, with the opportunity for collaborative study with other students through study groups.

Huddersfield has a great reputation for its excellent Psychology course, with students going on to work in various industries: healthcare, education, research, public services and more. Students get access to such incredible facilities during the course, including an EEG system to monitor brain activity, an eye-tracker, a specialist polygraph machine and once again, this is only the beginning. The possibilities for research are endless, with each psychology student completing their degree with such varied dissertations.

What support services are available at the University of Huddersfield?

A part of choosing the right university for me, also included making sure there were sufficient support systems in place.

A welcoming, safe and warm environment is essential for students to fully succeed and the University of Huddersfield has done amazingly with this. Its Wellbeing and Disability Service offers a range of options for supporting students, including counselling and individual provisions.

I have advised many prospective students wondering about studying Psychology at the University of Huddersfield, that I absolutely believe it is worth it. From the facilities, to the excellent support provided by both the staff and students alike; I couldn’t quite imagine going anywhere else.
