Hi, I'm Evetta and I study Illustration at Huddersfield. I'm living life exactly how I want, learning every day and growing as a person.
Why I chose Huddersfield
I grew up in the busy city of Manchester, surrounded by noise and night life, but I’ve always liked exploring beautiful natural landscapes. What drew me to Huddersfield was the smaller town centre surrounded by lovely views.
I've always had a huge passion for art, focusing my skills on graphic design and illustration.
During my A-Levels, I knew I wanted to study at a university, either close to home or further away.
My imagination was filled with visions of lovely late café nights and creating art in peace. However, after attending many university open days, meetings and tours, nothing really stood out to me. I felt constantly let down by the facilities.
Looking at my chosen degree across different universities, I realised lots of these departments were found in basements and dull rooms, completely defeating the purpose of art. The course introductions and staff never really inspired me either.
I could not afford the life I wanted to live in a place like Edinburgh or London, which did have wonderful departments. This eventually led me to Huddersfield which had the best of both worlds - great facilities and affordability.
Scenic Huddersfield
Since I was little, I’ve always liked exploring beautiful natural landscapes. What drew me to Huddersfield was that it's a smaller town centre surrounded by lovely views, parks, cafes and trails. I wanted to avoid the large busy crowds seen in Manchester and Leeds, and something like this smaller town was just what I needed.
As soon as I attended my interview and received my offer for Huddersfield, I knew this was my new home.
The art department at the University of Huddersfield was exactly what I was looking for! Having access to paint on walls, studio space and all creative students in one beautiful and quirky modern building - the Barbara Hepworth Building – was what I was searching for I loved how open the space was and truly felt like it was meant to be from that moment on.

“Huddersfield will always be my second home."

The best thing about living here is how close everything is to each other - I don’t need to walk far to get to where I need to.

What to consider when choosing a university
My biggest advice to any student looking for future study, is to “go and see for yourself”. Many places look different on photos than in real life.
Go to university open days, and look around the city/town, not just the departments on campus.
Please also view the accommodation! This so important because you can’t properly visualise living somewhere you have never visited.
The cost-of-living crisis impacted me as a student, and I was truly grateful for my accommodation options such as IQ Castings, Snow Island and Aspley.
There are many things you need to plan and think about when moving away to university, but you will have more motivation and feel a lot better about things if you're surrounded by an environment that feels like ‘home’.
I am now in my second year of university, and I am still very pleased with my choice. Living life exactly how I want, learning every day and growing as a person.
Huddersfield will always be my second home.
