I remember walking into my first day at Uni, feeling super excited, but at the same time super nervous! Straight away the midwifery lecturers put us at ease, they came in and introduced themselves and we were all given the chance to chat to each other. Everyone on the course is super lovely and we’re all in the same boat. Some of the second and third years also came in to talk to us about their ‘pals’ scheme, which means everyone who wants to can opt into ‘buddy up’ with people in the second and third year. I found this amazing because it gave me the opportunity to text someone when I needed advice about anything course-related, as they had already experienced first year.
Huddersfield’s pretty great when it comes to working together. As a midwife you would expect people to be friendly and supportive, but at Huddersfield they just go above and beyond. There is always someone around to help, whether it’s the lecturers, your cohort, other student midwives, personal tutors, placement teams or the academic skills development team – everyone works together. If I have a question, I can usually get a reply from my cohort within minutes, which is really helpful, or you can always book appointments with lecturers/academic team for further support.
Every day at Uni is different (which I love). Some days we’re doing clinical skills which help to prepare us for ‘real life midwifery’ by teaching us the skills we need for practice. Some days we do team-working exercises where we get together in groups and research specialist topics, which we then feed back to the wider cohort. We also have the most AMAZING and INSPIRATIONAL guest speakers who come in and talk to us about their experiences and roles within midwifery. They give us tips and advice about how we can improve the future of midwifery. Other days, we sit formative exams or focus on essays which I find this so beneficial as it helps us to prepare and achieve the best grades we can.
I think Huddersfield is amazing when it comes to placements! When you start here you are given the opportunity to choose which placement locations are most convenient for you. I was quite nervous about starting placement, but the lecturers give you plenty of tips and teach you all of the skills you’ll need beforehand. The mentors on placement are also brilliant and so supportive, as they were in the same position once. I also love that at Huddersfield we do placement blocks, meaning we get to learn the practical things before we go out in real life. It also means we get to know each midwife we work with well before moving on to different areas.
Last but definitely not least… the campus! I love, love, love the convenience of the University of Huddersfield as it’s in the perfect location. If you drive there are plenty of cheap all-day car parks within 5 to 10 minutes’ walk. If you get the train or bus, again, you are literally 10 to 15 minutes’ walk away. It is also so close to the town centre meaning you can easily pop to the shops or for lunch with your friends. Another thing I love about our campus is that most of the time we are in the Harold Wilson building, making moving between classes really easy and you’re very unlikely to get lost!
Choosing to study Midwifery at Huddersfield is definitely the best decision I have ever made, and I cannot wait for the next two years here!
