Music Journalism BA(Hons) – Third Year

Hi I’m Kerri. I am a creative and outgoing person, with a love for attending concerts, eating vegan junk food, and binge-watching Netflix. Studying at the University of Huddersfield has allowed me to excel as an individual and transform my passion into an exciting career prospect. I am currently on a placement year, working alongside a professional marketing team to create audio-visual and social media content.

I’ve always been interested in music. I was never skilled or patient enough to learn how to play it myself, but I have a lot of respect for those who do. Most, if not all, of my pocket money was spent on CDs and later concert tickets growing up. So, how could I possibly turn my passion into a career?

I chose to study Music Journalism at the University of Huddersfield.

I came across the University as it’s one of the only universities which offers the course I fell in love with. I knew that this university was the one for me when attending an Open Day. The University has a really friendly vibe and offered the full university experience – with a wide range of subject areas that attract people from all walks of life. This was unlike the smaller, purely creative institutions which also offered Music Journalism.

I chose to study here because the course was more varied than the other options available at the time. Choosing to study at the University of Huddersfield meant that I would develop skills in print journalism, radio, video and more.

I was aware that it is difficult to find, obtain and hold-down employment in any creative industry. So, I chose to study at the University of Huddersfield to eradicate this fear.  Studying here also allows you to learn from a lot more than just lectures! On my course, I had the opportunity to undertake a placement year. This has enabled me to gain vital work experience which will put me ahead of other candidates in the future.

I am currently working as a Video Marketing Assistant, which is enabling me to further develop the transferable and specialist skills I’ve already obtained from my degree. This experience has also allowed me to dip my toe into the world of marketing, meaning that my career prospects are broad.

Studying here has allowed me to explore a subject I am passionate about; whilst developing my awareness of cultural issues, expanding my creativity, and allowing me to face challenges that I would not have otherwise come across.  In second year, I produced a live radio show about the importance of culture, representation and feminism. This is the biggest, and most daunting project that I have completed to date. Not only did Radio Week push me out of my comfort zone, it helped me adapt to the same working environment which would be present at radio stations up and down the country.  The most impressive thing about this module, and my course overall, is how it encourages you to develop as a person and a creative.

If you’re thinking about studying Music Journalism at the University of Huddersfield, I would recommend coming along to an Open Day to get a taste of what it’s like here, as well as talking to current students to hear their opinions on the course!
