Software Engineering BSc(Hons)
Hey, I am Mandini Hettiarachchi-first year Software Engineering student from Sri Lanka
Working as a software engineer at NASA has forever been my dream. So, to kickstart my journey towards this goal, I’ve chosen my degree, Software Engineering at the University of Huddersfield.
After completing my A levels in Sri Lanka, I decided to pursue my higher studies in the UK. After extensive research on universities in the UK, I ultimately chose to begin my journey at the University of Huddersfield. Several factors influenced my decision. Firstly, that the university offers my desired course, Software Engineering.
Through my research, I discovered that the University is an award-winning institution. Additionally, its location in Huddersfield provides more affordable living costs for international students, further solidifying my decision.
The University of Huddersfield's provision of an optional placement year for my course was a significant factor in my decision. The School of Computing and Engineering has a high employment rate for graduates, which greatly influenced my choice to study software engineering.
My time so far at the University of Huddersfield
The University has been an excellent place for me to study and gain valuable experiences. In terms of academics, the module tutors are incredibly skilled at teaching their subjects, and the lecturers are supportive and helpful. Additionally, the School organises support sessions to complement our studies.
Regarding the social aspect of university life, the University is multicultural, with students from all corners of the globe. I have friends from various countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, England, Myanmar, Thailand, and more. The university hosts a major event called Global Week, where cultural food and events are shared and celebrated throughout the week. It's a fantastic opportunity to sample delicious cuisine from around the world and experience cultural performances.
Furthermore, the University offers a wide range of societies for students, and I am a member of the Sri Lankan Society. We organize various functions within the university to celebrate our cultural heritage. Additionally, we participate in the celebration of other cultural events such as Deepavali, Ramadan, Chinese New Year, and more. These experiences have enriched my university life in many ways.
I'm genuinely delighted that I chose to study Software Engineering at Huddersfield. It's not only an ideal environment for pursuing my degree but also an incredible opportunity to immerse myself in a new place and connect with so many diverse and fascinating individuals.
