Packing for university can be a stressful ordeal. This blog aims to make the process more manageable, enabling you to worry less about your luggage and be more excited about starting a new chapter in your life!

Make sure you’ve got the essentials

  • a laptop (don’t forget the charger)
  • notebooks
  • several pens and pencils.

Extra stationery is a plus, but if you are anything like me you will be approaching third year having only used a ruler once or twice.

That is basically the degree side of things sorted and you can always pop down to your university’s shop to stock up on paperclips if needs be, but what else do you need for your new living space?

When it comes to the kitchen...

make sure you pack everything you need to make your favourite meals:

  • frying pan
  • saucepan
  • baking tray
  • a wooden spoon
  • colander/sieve

Not forgetting...

  • plates
  • bowls
  • cutlery

As well as Tupperware to keep any leftovers fresh for tomorrow’s lunch!

It's likely that your accommodation will have you covered when it comes to other essentials - such as:

  • kettle
  • toaster
  • microwave

Remember not to stress if there’s something you have forgotten; you can always pick up a can opener from your local supermarket whilst doing your first weekly shop!

For your new bedroom you are going to need to bring...

  • duvet
  • pillows
  • bedsheets
  • pillow cases

It is always a good idea to bring a mattress protector too!

On top of this, a collection of your favourite photos, a few trinkets and a good blanket can make any student dorm feel like home.

Picking out what outfits to take to university, and which ones to leave behind, is probably one of the most tasking elements of packing. My one top tip is to ensure you take a range of clothes with you – from loungewear to formal to fancy dress (if you’ve enough space in your case!).

Don’t forget clothes hangers to hang your clothes and a laundry basket to help with the many trips to and from the laundry room. And if you want to save a few bucks, ensure that you bring a clothes horse to avoid wasting money on tumble drying everything.

It’s a blessing that there’s a chain supermarket literally across the road from most student halls in Huddersfield. However, just in case it’s a Sunday, or you don’t fancy a spot of shopping after traveling all day - make sure to pack a few toiletries, so you can at least have a nice shower before starting your first full day living away from home.

Oh, and don’t forget your toothbrush!

Keep in mind that no matter how careful you are, you will manage to accumulate a range of clutter and goods whilst staying at university… so, leave some space in your suitcase for the extra things you will want to take home with you once the academic year is up.

Huddersfield's train station has one particular employee who I'm fond of, Felix... the railway cat. Also, I've no doubt that my name has the most unique spelling.
