MSC MARKETING WITH EVENT STUDIES
Hello and welcome to my first blog as a postgraduate (PG) student. In this blog I will take you through my journey as a relatively new PG student who recently progressed from being an undergraduate. If you are a prospective PG student looking for some tips then read on…
Why I chose to do Msc Marketing with Event Studies
I decided to pursue my Master’s as I feel having a postgraduate degree will help me to secure a good job in the future, as well as giving me a head start in the competitive world of industry.
I graduated with a BA (Hons) Event Management degree and decided to get into the field of Event Management as the thought of working on different kinds of events all around the world excited me. During my placement year as the University’s Global Events Coordinator, I worked on several projects with the marketing department. I thoroughly enjoyed working on the marketing side and experienced a different perspective of marketing throughout my placement. Hence, I decided to broaden my educational choices to marketing, while still being in the events field.

How are postgraduate studies different from undergraduate studies?
Doing a postgraduate degree requires a lot of personal time and effort. Although I have lectures only three times a week, I still make a point of studying in the library every week day for a few hours.
The main difference between PG and UG is the amount of self-studying you are asked to do as it involves a lot of reading and researching. For each assessment we are required to submit, we must make sure that our writing style is purely academic and polished, the content uses references which are reliable and referenced properly, and the information provided is critically assessed.
PG lectures and seminars are more like a discussion among the lecturers and students, which help students grasp information not only from the lecturer, but from other students as well. This helps a lot because some students have work experience in the respective field and can share their experiences with the rest of the class.

Things I wish I knew before starting my postgraduate studies
Being a PG student requires a lot of responsibility and balance between academic and social life. It is handy to create a weekly timetable to divide your time equally between studying and socialising.
It is also helpful to try and read one journal article every night before going to sleep so that you get into the habit of reading articles and books which makes it easier when doing assessments.
Joining different societies is also a good idea as it helps you build your networking skills and makes you more involved in University life.
My social life as a postgraduate student
Since I graduated from the same University that I am now doing my Master’s at, I still have the same friends I had in my UG years. I have also met a lot of new people on my course and from different societies. I keep myself busy volunteering for events where I always get the chance to meet people from different cultural backgrounds which I thoroughly enjoy. Besides doing events, I like walking through town with my friends and trying new places to eat. Once in a while we even get together and do movie nights or play cards.
