Why I chose to study in the UK
I chose to study in the UK because of its strong reputation for research and the opportunity to learn from leading academics in my field. As someone interested in the relationship between environmental sustainability, climate change and economic development, I wanted to study in an environment where I could develop research with real-world impact.
UK universities are known for providing high-quality teaching and access to experienced researchers, which was particularly important for my PhD studies.
Why I chose the University of Huddersfield
I chose the University of Huddersfield because of its supportive research environment, strong academic reputation and expertise that aligned with my research interests.
As a postgraduate researcher, it was important for me to study at a university that encourages interdisciplinary research and provides strong support throughout the doctoral journey. This has been particularly valuable for my work in environmental sustainability, climate change and economic development.
The campus also stood out to me because of its welcoming atmosphere, modern facilities and student-friendly environment. There are excellent research resources and study spaces, as well as opportunities to connect with students from a wide range of backgrounds. Together, these create an inclusive and supportive academic community.
My research
My PhD research examines how climate change, technological innovation, renewable energy, and environmental sustainability interact to influence economic performance across countries. The research consists of three empirical essays that investigate the economic impacts of climate-related shocks, the role of technological innovation and institutional quality in improving environmental outcomes, and the contribution of renewable energy investment to environmental sustainability.
Using cross-country data and advanced econometric techniques, this research aims to provide evidence-based policy recommendations on how governments can strengthen environmental sustainability while promoting long-term economic resilience and sustainable growth.
Settling into life in Huddersfield
Several factors helped me settle into life in Huddersfield.
The support provided by academic staff, supervisors and student services played an important role in helping me adapt to both university life and my research studies. The friendly and multicultural community also made the transition easier, allowing me to build connections with students from different backgrounds.
The University's facilities, workshops and activities helped me become familiar with both academic and social life in the UK. Over time, getting involved in teaching support, research activities and everyday campus life helped me gain confidence and feel more at home.
My experience as an international student
My experience as an international student at the University of Huddersfield has been great and has contributed significantly to both my academic and personal development.
Studying in a diverse and multicultural environment has allowed me to engage with students and researchers from different backgrounds, which has broadened my perspective and help me strengthen my communication and teamwork skills.
From an academic perspective, the University has provided strong research support and access to the resources needed to progress my PhD work. The guidance and encouragement I have received from supervisors and academic staff have also played an important role in developing my research skills.
My advice to other international students
My advice to international students coming to Huddersfield is to stay open-minded and make the most of both the academic and social opportunities available.
Academically, take advantage of the support services available, including your supervisors, library resources, workshops and study skills sessions. Don't be afraid to ask questions or seek guidance when you need it.
Outside of your studies, I would encourage you to get involved in societies, student activities and campus events. These experiences can help you build confidence, make new connections and settle into life in the UK more quickly.
Finally, try to maintain a healthy balance between your studies and personal life. Adjusting to a new country takes time, but by staying proactive, patient and open to new experiences, you can make your time at university both rewarding and memorable.
