Huddersfield has a great variety of restaurants, from Brazilian and Burmese to Persian cuisines and more, with halal, non-halal, vegetarian and vegan options, where you can chill, celebrate your special occasions or simply get away from the library! After years of studying at the University of Huddersfield and eating out in Huddersfield, I have written this blog as a mini guide for you if you would like to know where to eat out. I will try to choose my 5 top places according to some of my fabulous culinary adventures in Huddersfield. Food lovers! Peek-a-boo…I see you…
If you are looking for a unique colourful and joyful place to eat out, it is definitely BOTAFOGO. It is a Brazilian restaurant right here in Huddersfield offering a diverse selection of meat with an All You Can Eat System. I call it heaven, Eden, paradise…I am literally not overreacting. It is a place where you will enjoy the colourful vintage Brazilian décor and the unique beats of Brazilian music. Food is a different cup of tea…trust me! I am a very picky person when it comes to food and I am pickier when it comes to meat. Everything is available, even non-meat options. All you have to do is call the restaurant 48 hours before to ask for what you need, halal, non-halal, non-meat. I am still not finished!! Besides lamb, beef, chicken, pork, sausages, you will be offered Brazilian sides. YASS! from Beef Empanadas (Brazilian Samosas), Pão de Queijo (Authentic Brazilian Cheese Bread), Arroz de Cenoura E Reviled (Carrot and Pea Rice), to Caldinho de Feijão (Brazilian Black Bean Soup) and Batata Frita Casera (homemade fries). There is also a salad-bar at your service whenever you want. After this, comes Da best part! Drumdrumdudum! It’s the Cinnamon Glazed Grilled Pineapple…a dairy free, gluten free, vegan desert À la Brésilienne that can help you sleep that night guilt-free. You only have to pay £21.50* to be teleported to Rio De Janeiro for authentic Brazilian sides and non-stop succulent mouth-watering meats. That’s a pretty great deal for a eat-aholic like me! *(Price corrrect at time of publishing)
As a Persian cuisine lover, I was keen to find a Persian place, hoping there would be one in Huddersfield…its APADANA Persian Restaurant. This place has recreated the warmth of traditional Iranian culinary dishes in an enjoyable Persian environment. Let me tell you that if you love saffron, you will love APADANA’s balanced and fine Persian flavours. You feel that the meat is marinated to perfection! Once the dinner is over, you may want to digest the amazing food you had…I recommend their nicely presented impeccably Persian fragrant tea with cardamom and saffron (I can’t recall the taste now, but I feel it has cinnamon too). Besides, prices are fair, and the staff are the loveliest. My favourite meal is the Joojeh (Saffron Chicken Kebab), I highly recommend it!
Merhaba, Hoşgeldiniz! Good guessing, we are at the Turkish restaurant in Huddersfield town centre. EPHESUS offers a diverse menu with simple but nice dishes. My favourite dish and I highly recommend it, is the İskender kebab. This is a very popular Turkish dish made of slices of lamb, a slice of bread, special butter, Iskender sauce with garlic, natural yoghurt, parsley and Turkish herbs. Afiyet olsun! This place has good food and also has good vibes for celebrating a special occasion. I celebrated my 24th birthday here and the staff offered us cakes and tea, it was so sweet of them! So, if you are looking for a Turkish style dinner or celebrating a special occasion, this is your place! PS: they do offers from time to time (so keep checking).
CHU CHU!! Trans-Siberian Orient Express Train to China!!!
Best Chinese in Huddersfield? RIVERS is the right place. The food is varied and delicious, the manager is so sweet, and the vibes are just amazing!! I celebrated my 25th birthday here and it was WONDERFUL! My friends booked me a special table with a special dinner set meal with chicken and sweetcorn soup, spare ribs with peking sauce, spring rolls and prawn toast, fried chicken with plum chilli sauce, sliced fillet steak with ginger and spring onions, fried lamb with leek, egg fried rice and Chinese tea. At the end we had a nice long conversation with the manager who was very welcoming.
In all honesty, I cannot eat spicy food, so I went to LALA'S once only, but if you do love spicy food, then this is your place! They offer an exceptional dining experience with delicious traditional Kashmiri dishes with a touch of modernity. And the presentation is just wonderful, I bet you’ll go there just to take pictures for Instagram of their huge Kashmiri bread. Prepare yourself, because when it says spicy, expect it to be SPICY!
These are my 5 top places to eat out in Huddersfield, all within walking distance of the University of Huddersfield, but I did not try all the restaurants in town as I have some food restrictions. I also have other favourite places such as MANJAROS with their WAKA WAKA chicken, and mushroom topped chicken parmesan, (Top Tip - you need to be really hungry if you go there, because the portions are huge and the food is very filling). Places such as MED ONE and UGARIT are the nicest and cleanest places for Lebanese Syrian cuisine in Huddersfield. When it’s sunny, go to the Slug & Lettuce, amazing food and place. I can also suggest HUMPIT (they have the best falafel in Huddersfield) and the Kurdish place called KOBANE for a succulent lamb ghozi if you are on budget (trust me it is the best). Not forgetting ICON BURGER and ROTI BAR with their finest and richest burgers and BAR MAROC and RAJAS for really nice pizza…these are great places for a quick lunch or early dinner. My next destination will be CAFÉ MANDALAY Burmese restaurant, as many people recommended it to me, it will definitely be my next restaurant (I have a feeling it belongs in the 5 top restaurants list). I should also mention that there are wonderful places for tea and dessert, I think that I will be writing another blog for this, stay tuned!
