Five things you need to know about using Clearing

Hi! I’m Katie, a psychology student here in Huddersfield, and I applied through Clearing in 2024.
I know lots of people find the idea of applying to uni through Clearing scary, so here are my top tips for anyone considering applying this summer.
1. Clearing is more common than you think
I think that one of the biggest misconceptions about Clearing is that it's only for students who have missed their grades. In reality, lots of students use Clearing every year for a variety of different reasons.
Some students do achieve different grades than expected and need to explore alternative options, others decide to change their course or university at the last minute. Some students receive better grades than they expected, and use Clearing to look at opportunities they hadn't previously considered. The important thing to remember is that using Clearing doesn't mean you've failed, it's simply another way of finding the perfect course for you.
2. Do your research before Results Day
One of the best pieces of advice I can give is to start researching universities and courses before Results Day. This is how you set yourself up for success!
Make a list of universities that interest you and explore their websites, specifically the Clearing pages.
Many universities advertise their courses available through Clearing long before Results Day, and you can also find them on the UCAS website. This gives you plenty of time to make a decision. If you have your grades before Results Day, then you can apply through Clearing from 2 July, either by calling universities, or online.
Make sure to look at course content, placement opportunities, accommodation, campus facilities and student support services. Having a few options in mind before results day can make the whole process feel much less stressful if you do decide to go through Clearing.
I also recommend writing down key information about each course, including entry requirements and contact details, so everything is easily accessible when you need it.
3. Have your personal information ready on Results Day
Before you call any universities to apply, have the following information ready:
- Your UCAS ID number,
- your exam results,
- details of the course you're interested in,
- any questions you'd like to ask.
I know that many students feel worried or concerned about calling a university, however being prepared can help ease this stress. It can help to write down a few notes so you feel more confident during the conversation.
Most importantly, don't be afraid to ask questions, as this is your opportunity to find out whether the course and university are the right fit for you.
4. Visit the university if you can
Many universities offer Clearing open days, campus tours, or virtual events during the time that clearing is open. Seeing the campus for yourself can help you decide whether you'll feel comfortable studying there, whether the vibe of the uni is for you, and you can often see the accommodation options too.
You can also speak to current students, look at different societies, and get a better sense of what student life is really like.
5. Don’t rush into anything!
Clearing is open for more than one day, so don't feel pressured to make a decision immediately. It's okay to contact multiple universities, explore different course options, and ask plenty of questions before confirming your place.
While Results Day can feel fast-paced, choosing a university is a big decision that will shape the next few years of your life.
It is really important to take the time and compare your options, and think about which university feels like the best fit for you.
If you're unsure, talk things through with your parents, tutors, teachers, or friends. A little extra time spent thinking can help you feel more confident that you're making the right choice for your future – but don't take too long as places go quickly on some courses.
