Business Intelligence and Analytics Student

Hi, I’m Ilo and I studied for a Master’s degree in Business Intelligence and Analytics in the Huddersfield Business School. I was also President of the Nigerian Student Society at the University and I worked part-time as an Academic Rep Assistant with the Students' Union.

One of my favourite things about studying at the University of Huddersfield was the range of student support services that I had access to.

Support with your application

Before I enrolled as a student, I had admission offers from other Universities in the UK and Europe. What tipped the scale in favour of Huddersfield was the support I received from the regional office in Nigeria. The representatives there were always willing to answer my questions about the University and offer advice on the application process, payment process and the visa application process. I was also given information about my arrival to Huddersfield, like how to book a taxi from the airport, where to order Nigerian food and how to get groceries. Another service that was helpful was HudLets, the Students’ Union’s letting agency.

The international office also organised virtual sessions where I could get answers to my questions about my application, enrolment, visa processing and admissions.

Choosing to study at the University of Huddersfield was an easy one because of the support I had received during the application stage.

Academic support

Studying in a country different from where you had your primary and secondary education can be quite challenging and this is where academic support comes in! Academic Skills Tutors can help you make the most of your studies by providing support for academic and writing skills and providing support with essays and referencing.

The Library team also provides support to students by hosting live sessions. The live sessions are optional online training sessions for students, and they provide support for referencing, tips and tricks for getting the most out of the library's search engine, and offer an informal chit chat about their services. I attended live sessions on referencing, and that made a remarkable difference in the quality of my essays.

Wellbeing and Disability services

Settling into a new environment and living away from your family can be challenging and can take a toll on your mental health. The wellbeing service is the go-to team for mental health support. It’s comforting to know that there’s a team at the University that is always willing to listen and to me, provide counselling services and therapy.

I also want to point out that if you are in need of any reasonable adjustment, the disability services are here to support you.

Student life

Getting involved with the activities that the Students’ Union has organised has helped me meet different people, build skills that are relevant after graduation and expand my world view. The Students’ Union exists to make students’ lives better and that’s literally what they do! In addition, they run an advice centre that helps students with anything from accommodation to finance to representing students at networks.

Careers and Employability

The Careers and Employability team are here to help you with your CV and cover letter review. There’s also a Job Shop that I’m subscribed to, and I get weekly alerts about job vacancies and placement opportunities that I can apply to. The team can do mock interviews to help with your job search, run an annual Graduate Jobs Fair and share graduate opportunities to help with graduate job searches.

These are few of the services that support students and there are many more available to access. I really believe that if you feel supported at University, you can go on to achieve your academic and career goals.

I’m happy that I chose to study at a diverse and inclusive University that supports students throughout their academic journey.
