Product Design BA/BSc(Hons) - Second Year

Hello I'm Rohan! Alongside studying BSc Product Design I enjoy pursuing photography and work as a freelance photographer. I love long hikes in the Peak District and volunteer as a puppy socialiser for Support Dogs.

Transferring to the University of Huddersfield

How best to describe Huddersfield? Either a diverse and global community with influences and culture from around the world, or a bustling northern British town, set amongst some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK. The University of Huddersfield amalgamates these two settings and creates an inclusive and modern environment to learn in, yet built on the foundations of tradition with many of the University’s buildings spanning back to the Industrial Revolution. Once playing a pivotal role in the industrialisation of Britain, Huddersfield is now home to a new type of powerhouse: modern education.

I’m Rohan, originating from the southeast of England. I study Product Design here at Huddersfield’s School of Art, Design and Architecture, however I transferred from another university prior to this. So, why did I choose Huddersfield?

Aside from industry experience of teaching staff and fantastic facilities to support my studies, studying here in West Yorkshire has shown me how great university life can be when set in a place as unique as Huddersfield.

As a lover of the outdoors, hiking and cycling, but also the hustle and bustle that comes with towns and cities, Huddersfield really is the perfect combination of these two seemingly distant worlds.

With an impressively vast range of bars, clubs and restaurants all within walking distance, Huddersfield has offered me a fantastic place to continue my student life. However, set in the foothills of the Peak District National Park, a beautiful hike or bike ride is only minutes away. Huddersfield Students’ Union also takes absolute advantage of this by running societies allowing University students to participate in hiking, mountaineering and photography.

Even with the restrictions and limitations brought on by COVID-19, my experience studying at Huddersfield has still been an incredible one to remember. As a new student this academic year, I was really looking forward to the Welcome Fair and other activities run by the SU. Although this was not able to take place in person, an online event allowed me to browse all the different societies and activities available to me. I was also hugely impressed with the number of academic societies that are available to Huddersfield students, creating an integrated and community approach to courses where students from all years are able to meet (currently digitally), discuss and support one another.

Due to the various obstacles that COVID-19 has thrown at us, I have needed to speak with members of support staff within the University. After experiencing concerns with one of my second-year projects, speaking to my Graduate Teaching Assistant offered an enormous amount of support and understanding to my situation. Having been a student within the School of Art, Design and Architecture at Huddersfield, the GTA I spoke to was able to offer me lots of reassurance and empathy and helped to quickly resolve my situation.

I have been continually impressed with the University’s communication, both at a University-wide level and within my course, even before I enrolled. As a student transferring into second year, my teaching staff have offered me fantastic support and were aware I was not a first-year student here. I have been offered continual support and given the opportunity to ask many questions to help me settle in. My second-year tutor even took the time to arrange a Zoom meeting over summer, prior to me beginning my studies at Huddersfield. This allowed me to gain a greater understanding of how the next year would take shape and feel as prepared as possible before beginning my second year of studying Product Design.

To summarise, I have been hugely impressed with the University’s communication, both as a prospective student, right the way through to receiving information now on my course.

Huddersfield’s unique environment and diversity have made it a fantastic place to continue life as a student, and despite living through the COVID-19 pandemic and all the associated restrictions that have come into play, I have been hugely impressed with range of opportunities that are still available to students.
