Huddersfield, who’s heard of that place right?
Countless are the times when I found myself being abroad and having to explain to people where I am studying. The most common answer- somewhere in between Manchester and Leeds. Sure, I didn’t know anything about Huddersfield before actually coming here but these four years have proven that it is actually a great location for a student.
Here are my top reasons that make this little town great for studying here.
Location
I’ve always loved small towns. The people are friendly, it is easy to get to different places and even safer to walk home from a night out.
Huddersfield has a great many places to hang out with friends and have a good night out without having to break the bank. There are plenty of bars and clubs for all occasions. My favourite spot to meet with friends is Bar Maroc if we’re in the mood for a beer and a good conversation. If I need a quiet place for writing my assignments, Epicure Bar and Kitchen is my perfect refugee. However if I ever feel the need to experience those big city lights, the little town of Huddersfield is only a 20 minutes train ride to Leeds or a 40 minutes ride to Manchester.
Being a student, makes it really important to live somewhere where everything doesn’t cost a fortune, starting with rent. In Huddersfield students can get a really good deal on their accommodation, with prime student halls being no more than £80 per week. Which is pretty good considering that Manchester student accommodations start from £110 per week. But if you’d prefer to save some money, Huddersfield gives you the chance to share a house with your best mates for a really affordable price. I was lucky enough to find my dream flat, a place that I have no difficulties calling home.
Teaching Experience
I have been warned by several friends that the Marketing courses at Huddersfield were exceptional in terms of level of teaching and indeed I was not left disappointed. Being a smaller university it is common for students here to have a more personal relationship with the tutors. From them knowing each of their students’ name to having open door policies in terms of meeting hours. I have always received extra explanation and help whenever I found myself in difficulty which I’m not sure would happen in bigger universities. Also, other facilities like the Placement Unit are always willing to go the extra mile to help students. From reviewing all the job applications and CVs to actually conducting mock interviews or assessment centres.
Just being on campus here is great, as you can truly feel the international spirit. You always learn new things about different cultures and have the opportunity to participate at the fun international events that make you view the world from a completely different perspective.
Development of Skills
The University offers many job opportunities on campus that not only give you an additional income but will also add value to your CV. In my first year at the University have been able to conduct some consultancy research for local businesses which helped me secure my placement. In addition to this I also hold down a part time job outside of the University and I was able to fit my working hours around my timetable. I truly believe that working whilst studying helped me develop some valuable life skills which is going to make me more employable after I graduate.
I can say without a doubt that being a student in Huddersfield is absolutely fantastic. The University really cares about its students, rent is cheap, leaving space for affording a fun social life. If you’re able to work while studying you’ll also manage to earn good a income, allowing you to not have to stress until you land that dream job!
