Why I chose Digital Marketing

Elliott Duggan-Edwards
Digital Marketing BSc(Hons) - First Year
Hi, my name is Elliott, I am a first year student at UoH studying Digital Marketing. I am 25 years old and come from North Wales, in my spare time I like to watch sports and play videogame’s. I'm a member of the Musical Theatre and Ultimate Frisbee Society.
Hi all! My name is Elliott Duggan-Edwards, and today I want to share with you why I chose the course I’m studying at the University of Huddersfield!
I am what is called a ‘mature student’ meaning, old basically. Well, I’m 25, and have previously studied at a different university... at this time I was unsure on what I wanted to do with myself, so I chose a course without doing much research into it and pretty much followed what my friend was doing – please do not make this mistake!! I hated my time there and had dropped out by the end of the first year!
For the past couple years, I worked in Marketing for a jewellery company and really enjoyed it! Then, Covid-19 happened – and the future became uncertain. I had been flirting with the idea of going back to university at some point, and this seemed like a perfect time.
I had a couple of friends who had previously studied at Huddersfield and they had nothing but positive things to say about it, and when I first came here to have a look around – they were not wrong! It is a lovely town, with all the shops you could need, friendly people and plenty to see.
I spend a lot of my free time up at a place called Greenhead Park, I first heard of this through a Facebook University Group when I was trying to find out where is good in Huddersfield for Pokemon GO!
While the ‘university experience’ is not what we would like it to be right now, I am still having a great time and meeting a lot of new people. I joined a few of societies (Musical Theatre, Tabletop and Ultimate Frisbee) and they are always holding events over Microsoft Teams and training sessions for Frisbee! I can’t wait to finally meet all of these people in person once life is back to normal!

One of my biggest fears in coming to university was as I previously mentioned – my age. I worried that I would struggle to fit in and make new friends because they might think that I am ‘too old’ but this hasn’t been the case at all – meeting new people and making friends through my course and societies has been amazing!
As for the course I am doing, Digital Marketing – I am really enjoying it so far, due to the current national lockdown we are not on campus at the moment, but this isn’t an issue because the friendly staff are always on hand via email or a Teams meeting if you have any issues! The facilities at the University are also great, with a huge library which you can go to – I was taken away by how big the University is – and the location is perfect, most of the accommodations are close by, and the town centre is less than a 5 minute walk away!

The reason I chose Digital Marketing is because, I have previously done marketing work and loved it, and love using social media! The opportunities are endless! I’m a massive football fan, and would love to work on the Social Media team for a big club like Man City, or one of the big German teams (those of you who use Football Twitter know what I’m talking about, the admin of Bayern Leverkusen Twitter is an absolute legend).
I’m really looking forward to the rest of the year at Huddersfield, and to next year where hopefully we will be able to do even more socialising and exciting stuff! Hope to see you around!
