I’ve been living in Huddersfield for almost five years, so I know what living here as a student is really like. Long story short, I think Huddersfield has the perfect profile for student life and here’s why…
Well this really depends on the weather, the season and which period of the year it is. My favourite weather is when it’s sunny and cold. This is the perfect time to go to Greenhead Park, which is just 10 minutes’ walk from the town centre. It’s the perfect place to relax, contemplate and admire the endless magic and wonder this park has to give. For me it is the best place to de-stress after a long exhausting week.
If it’s a match day you can go to the John’s Smith Stadium. Psst! The International Office at the university offers tickets for several matches for just £5, and even free match tickets sometimes!
When it’s night-time, it’s movie time!!! You can go to the Odeon Cinema to watch a movie, eat popcorn and enjoy a drink. Weekends in Huddersfield are never the same.
When it’s Bonfire Night I prefer to go up to Castle Hill, one of the most well-known landmarks in Huddersfield. You can then enjoy the most picturesque view of Huddersfield with fireworks everywhere across the town. In spring, it’s Saint Patrick’s Day when you can enjoy one of the most marvellous parades we see in town. Once it’s summer, you must spend your weekend at the Food and Drink Festival in town where you can try all types of street food.
My favourite part, FOOD! Well, this literally needs its own blog, but I will try to be as concise as I can. Well, the good thing about Huddersfield is that it has a good variety of food from English, Indian, Italian, Mexican to Persian, Chinese and Lebanese food (with both Halal and non-Halal options). But when it come to my favourite place of the moment (because I always have a new favourite place) it is BOTAFOGO, a Brazilian restaurant in the heart of the town centre. You pay £20 and you eat NON-STOP all sorts of meat with salads, rice and bread and drinks à la brésilienne. OMG! The food is D E L I C I O U S! And the best part is when they bring you that grilled pineapple with cinnamon. That’s ecstasy. I feel hungry right now!
Well after this I am sure you will not be able to eat anything else, but Heavenly Desserts is just next door. I know! But a small delightful cookie-dough with strawberries is not a big deal and will take your enjoyment to the next level. I am not responsible for the nightmares you may have when you sleep. (Perhaps walk it off before sleeping, so I don’t feel guilty).
To begin with, Huddersfield is one of the largest towns in England. I know some of you will imagine it as an isolated area with 30 houses, cows and sheep. Good News! It’s not like that at all, it is more like a small city with all the facilities you need; plus, the most important thing, it is the most well-connected city I have ever seen. Luckily, Huddersfield is geographically located between big cities, including Leeds, Manchester, Bradford, Sheffield and York. These are all only a 1-hour train journey maximum. This means that whenever you want a break from the routine, you can easily go for a day trip with your friends, a birthday party or shopping. Free tip - just try to get accommodation close to the train station and you will feel like you live in all these cities, to the point where you can go after classes to Leeds for dinner and come back – simple! You’ll thank me later!
Moreover, there is a train that takes you directly from Huddersfield to Manchester airport, one of the largest airports in the UK. I have never struggled to find my flights to various destinations including Europe, North Africa, Middle East and New Zealand. And a bonus, the train station is literally inside Manchester Airport so you can travel and come back safely and comfortably! So, with a well-connected airport and a well-connected town, YOU ARE CONNECTED TO THE WORLD, from that small town called Huddersfield!
I believe that Huddersfield is the best place to live and study!
